Amazon.com Well organized and appropriately paced, dance instructor Cal Pozo's The Basic Lessons covers the fundamentals of ballroom dances including the foxtrot, rumba, cha-cha, mambo, lindy, and more. Each dance is taught in four sections: an explanation and history of the dance, animated footprints stepping out the moves, the perspectives (front and back) of each partner, and finally, a full-out demonstration. There are a few drawbacks. The music is ultra-cheesy (remember the canned music that used to blare from the organ store at your local mall?), and the sets and dancers' wardrobes recall the worst moments of '80s fashion. But practice while no one is looking, maintain your sense of humor, and--even if you can't chew gum and walk without stumbling--this video will have you swirling on the dance floor in no time. --Beth Massa

Falling short December 24, 1999 Joseph 23 out of 27 found this review helpful
Although the video does have some of the very basic steps for some dances it falls short of teaching anyone how to dance with any real confidence. The video only gives the very basic steps, not enough to feel comfortable at any event where adults may be dancing. The video is not money well spent, even for those of us with two left feet! Use the money towards some group lessons; they are much more fun, inexpensive, and you'll learn a lot more.
The basic dance steps he outlines were helpful for classes. January 27, 1999 20 out of 23 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed the video. It helped me a lot with the basic moves I am learning in my dance classes. I seem to have two left feet in dancing. I'm more accustomed to competitive sports. Now that I know of other videos, especially Salsa Merengue and The Latin Dances, I'm going to purchase them.
GOOD STUFF October 30, 2000 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I would not recommend this video for people who pick moves up quickly because they are very basic but for someone like me who lacks any dancing ability, it has helped immensely. For those who have no coordination and would like some these videos are a good plac to start!!
Wonderful November 5, 2000 Atalanta (Saskatchewan, Canada) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
My husband and I want to learn to dance so we bought this video. It was great for someone like us who have little dance experience and who want to learn the basic steps. It didn't provide us with much we could use immediately on the dance floor but it did provide a base for us to start from. That is very important. Some of the videos and classes assume you know more than you do. We were very impressed and plan to buy more of his videos.
self-conscious beginners rejoice July 13, 2003 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Although I work out regularly with step and aerobic dance, social dance is a new beast to me. My husband and I watched this video separately and then got together to practice the steps. Cal is very supportive and friendly; he assumes you know nothing about dance and really does teach you the basics, which I would have trouble learning in a class full of other folks. Yes, folks, it's just a start, but it's a great way for rank beginners to get their feet moving. We're purchasing more of the series and recommend this video for those of you who want to dance at the weddings instead of sitting on the sidelines watching.
