Amazon.com Babymugs is little more than a 30-minute parade of infant faces--some drooling, some chortling, some yawning, etc. But it's phenomenally popular, as the two film-industry-outsider moms who rustled up the energy and ingenuity to pull the tape together in the mid '90s were fortuitous enough to find out, because babies three months and older are natural-born oglers. Watching other tykes, it turns out, is key to an early-development phase involving behavior; the sight of laughter or bewilderment or tears or frustration triggers recognition and, eventually, thoughtful responses. In essence, early exposure to other real, live babies' mugs may make for more sociable children--a good reason to buy this tape if the latest baby boom has yet to hit your block. Little ones may also take a liking to the video's thoughtfully selected background music. A roadhouse blues number, a little smooth jazz, a country twanger, and a simple guitar lullaby, among others, set the stage for this uncommonly cute showcase, which, to its credit, is also reasonably inclusive. The producers round out the roundup with a sprinkling of Asian American, African American, and Hispanic mugs, not to mention a few enormously fat ones and some sporting the sort of ears destined to incite future schoolyard bullies, adequately doing the trick of putting a face (many faces, actually) on the American populace. --Tammy La Gorce

Not what I expected June 24, 2000 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
My 16-month old absolutely loves watching other babies and especially the baby in the sun on Teletubbies. With that in mind, I first purchased the video "Baby Faces" which was an instant hit with her! "Baby Faces" shows babies dancing, bathing, eating, etc., (with kid songs in the background) and the action really keeps her attention. When I bought "Baby Mugs", I thought it would be another great addition to her video library, but was I wrong! She never gave the video more than five minutes of total attention time. I think its because all you see on this video are the faces of babies. Its like looking at snapshots of babies sitting still. Also, the background music (jazz) didn't capture her attention. "Baby Mugs" does show cute pictures of babies, and although I like the background music myself, it just doesn't work for my daughter. The video might be stimulating for a much younger baby because it is so mellow.
Best for very little babies! November 17, 2000 L. von Allmen (California) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
My daughter loved this video when she was very small. She was always very drawn to other babies and this video captivated her. I agree with the other reviewers that the video does not offer much for the older infant (perhaps > 6 months). If the makers of this video ever "update" it, I think another music choice, or, even better, just the sounds of the babies themselves would be more welcome (at least by the mommies and daddies).
Uneven January 17, 2002 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this video for my son recently, when he was just over three months old. When he's in the mood, he seems intrigued by it, though he was a little overwhelmed by all the images at first. I would recommend it to try for young babies, with two cautions/complaints: there are sections where it's not even moving video, but just still shots of baby faces (this is silly and boring). And two, my baby got frightened and started crying when, about two thirds of the way through, they started unnecessary quick-cut editing that has faces popping up, zipping off screen, etc. Perhaps not for sensitive younger babies.
Disappointing! February 17, 2000 Mary Jane Hyde (Southern California) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
My 9 month old daughter wasn't interested in this video. I think there wasn't enough activity and the music was less than captivating. I thought she would enjoy it as she loves and is totally enthralled by Baby Mozart, Baby Einstein, and the Brainy Baby videos. But like I said she wasn't taken with Babymugs and I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would, which admittedly is a factor considering the fact that my daughter can watch the same video over and over and over...
NOT WORTH IT!! March 21, 2002 CORRI (california) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this video today and am not one to take the time to write a reveiw, but this video was so horrible that I want to be sure that no other parent spends any money for it.The music is not child freindly, some of the babies are actually frightening!!I thought this would be like baby faces video(which I could not find) I was shocked when I saw the poor quality of this video. I think I could have made a better one!!
