Amazon.com Childbirth educator Sherry Turney is a cheerful and knowledgeable guide to the complex--and sometimes intimidating--world of labor and birth. In this four-hour tape, she teaches her two-day course to an actual class, covering signs and stages of labor, exercise and breathing during labor, and hospital procedures for vaginal and cesarean deliveries. She uses a variety of helpful props--including charts, fetal and pelvic models, and often, herself--to demonstrate the various aspects of childbirth. As a doula who has assisted many births, Turney peppers her lessons with plenty of anecdotes that enlighten and prepare viewers to expect the unexpected. When it comes to the often controversial subject of medication, she handles it with neutrality, giving the pros and cons, which is not always the case in actual classes. Finally, Turney conscientiously includes advice for useful participation by coaches throughout the course. This two-tape set comes with an informational pamphlet and is useful both as an at-home reference for those already taking a class and as a refresher course for second-time parents. --Kimberly Heinrichs
Description * Not sure what to expect? * Unable to attend a childbirth class? * Need a refresher course? * Confined to bedrest? "Labor of Love Childbirth Class" is the ONLY Complete Lamaze Class reflecting obstetrical care in the 21st Century! Newly updated and digitized in 2002,"Labor of Love" is a unique experience in childbirth education that prepares you for labor and delivery according to obstetrical procedures used today! "Labor of Love" provides a workbook and over "4 hours" of detailed instruction that takes you from the unknowns of childbirth into practical applications that will work for you! There are other videos on the market today that cover the topic of childbirth in a shorter amount of time but do not provide the level of detail or updated information that is relevant in the delivery of obstetrical care today. The success of this video series is evident in that it has been widely accepted by both private and military hospitals and the national support group for bedrest mom's "Sidelines" as the "GOLD STANDARD" for mothers unable to attend hospital based classes. Childbirth Educators, Women's Health Centers, Homes For Unwed Mothers and Physicians recommend this video to their bedrest mom's. Nationwide, many libraries have added this video series to their childbirth resource section. Topics include: Third Trimester Experiences, Physiology of Labor & Delivery, Stages & Phases of Labor, Medical Interventions, Comfort Techniques, Medication-Epidural, Breathing Techniques, C-Section & VBAC, Postpartum Mom

Childbirth class convenience.....Wonderful! December 21, 1999 Anna Flowers, author (Satellite Beach, Florida) 29 out of 30 found this review helpful
As a first time mom that works fulltime, I was so excited to see that a childbirthclass was finally on video. My time is so limited, with commuting, I didnt know how I was going to be able to attend classes once a week on the hospitals schedule. My husband loved the idea of taking it at home, at our pace and we learned so much. Sherry is a wonderful teacher that let us know what to expect. It was humorous and informative. We felt like we were sitting in her class but were on our coach. My husband and I highly recommend this wonderful alternative.
Fun, Informative and Convenient March 9, 2000 Dayne Wensel (Seattle, WA) 19 out of 21 found this review helpful
As a second time parent, I found this video complete and informative. The information was presented in a humorous and entertaining manor. With my first pregnancy I attended a class at the hospital, it nearly put me to sleep. Sherry was fantastic and I enjoyed her wit, she made learning a joy. I learned so much more from her class then I did the one I took at the hospital. As a teacher myself, I can say, she is one of the best teachers I have observed teach almost any subject. I would highly recommend this video, even if you have already taken a class. If not this one is all you need. We loved being able to take this class at home. With both of us working, we found if difficult to find time to attend a class or find a baby sitter for our two year old. This was perfect, THANK YOU Sherry.
A great resource. June 3, 2000 H. Johnson (Bella Vista, CA USA) 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
Murphey's Law strikes again: as luck would have it, my job kept me away for all but two of the childbirth classes my wife and I enrolled in locally. Luckily, I learned about this video soon after starting the classes. While Ms. Tunney isn't polished in the Hollywood sense, she is quite an effective instructor, and presents the class in a concise, yet relaxed manner. Due to the wonders of editing, and Sherry's teaching skills, my wife and I actually found this video to be a better resource than the classes given in our community. If we had it to do over again, we both agree that we would skip all of the local classes, except the one dealing with hospital orientation, and focus our attention on the video. I highly recommend this tape; it's done much to help me deal with the "new dad jitters." (Still, if my wife-- normally one of the kindest humans I've ever known--looks at me and shouts "You did this to me! " while in the delivery room, I'll be begging the doctor to give ME the drugs.)
Not bad - except for the Tylenol problem. March 21, 2002 C. Douglass (Cary, Illinois United States) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
I found this video to be very helpful and full of useful information. My hubby and I are both in the medical field and really only wanted a refresher course, not the whole 4-6 week class, and this fit the bill. The info we felt we didn't need to hear again just got fast-forwarded through. That said, there are a few problems. It is definately low-tech, and could really use some perked up graphics or something. It kind of reminded me of the video you watch at work because you missed attending the mandatory inservice in person. Long, not terribly exciting, but lots of information. My biggest problem, though, is that the instructor states SEVERAL times that, "I want you on 2 Extra-Strength Tylenol every 4 hours after the delivery". This point is made something like 3 times. The problem? Extra-Strength Tylenol has 500mg per tablet, and you're taking 1000mg at a shot. If you take this dose every 4 hours as stated, you are taking 6000mg a day. The max dosing for Tylenol is 4000mg a day. Meaning that if you take her advise, you are exceeding that max dose by 2000mg each day. Would the instructor have known that? Probably not. Why? Because she's a Certified Childbirth Educator, not an RN, not an MD. (Practicing medicine without a license??)I was rather taken aback that this suggestion even made it on the video - it should have been edited out. I hope that in future editions of this video that part will get zapped. While otherwise a decent video, she is giving inaccurate and potentially harmful information out to every person that views this tape.
Excellent substitute for a birthing class March 20, 2001 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I'm expecting my second child and just watched this video again. It is very very imformative and prepares you in all aspects of delivery and labor. My husband and I felt too busy and too impatient to sit through the classes. This video is a perfect substitute. The instructor's voice and grammar are very annoying, but the content is complete and valuable. I have replayed parts of this video a few times, and turned it on when I went in labor with my first, to confirm that I was reading the signs correctly. If you can't or don't want to take a class, buy this tape instead.
