| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Dave Hood created the There Goes a... series to show off the vehicles and jobs children tend to be fascinated with. As the host, he balanced information with slapstick antics, but always respected the people who perform the job as well as the kids watching the video. In There Goes a Tractor, Dave Sidoni takes over as host and he's not nearly as good, too often indulging in a "golly gee" tone of voice that probably won't annoy kids nearly as much as the adults watching with them. In this episode, "Farmer Dave" looks at life on a big, industrial farm, with the focus primarily on the versatile tractor. The range of shapes and sizes of tractors (some have as many as six wheels per axle!) is quite impressive. Dave also takes a look at other types of farm machinery, from milking machines on dairy farms to helicopter crop dusters. He also tours an ice cream factory and examines the cheese-making process, but these are throwaway bits that are not explained very well. However, the heart of There Goes a Tractor is in the big vehicles and machines, and in that it does not disappoint. --Andy Spletzer

not the best of this popular series February 28, 2003 audrey_the_librarian (boston ma united states) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
This installment of the popular There Goes A .... series is not as good as others. As a matter of fact, I'd say it is one of the worst, though kids will still enjoy it. The host is Dave Sidoni rather than Dave Hood, and the emphasis is on goofiness rather than on charm or information. While we do see lots of tractors and many attachments are shown (plow, fertilizer, spreader, etc.), including the inside of the cab, these devices are not explained terribly well or examined closely. Similarly, Dave visits a seed store, maintenance garage, milking facility, and ice cream and cheese manufacturers, but nothing is really explained in any depth, as other tapes in the series do. Still, if your child loves tractors, they will not be put off by goofy Dave or a lack of information. They will enjoy this tour of a big farm (not a friendly mom-and-pop farm with animals running around, unfortunately). Dave also rides in a helicopter to fertilize a field. My advice: if your child is primarily interested in tractors, get this video; if you are just starting on this fun series and don't really care where you start, then try There Goes a Firetruck or There Goes a Bulldozer first -- they are funnier and more interesting.
Corny but does the job June 10, 2002 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought this video because my son loved his Grandfather's tractor. He loves the video and mimics Dave a lot. We have to watch it continuously. As far as my 27 month old goes, it rates 5 stars. Keeps his attention, relatively educational. It does talk mostly about life on a farm rather than just tractors but that is the educational part. As far as my husband I go it rates a little less on the star chart. It is so corny it is annoying and if you sit with your kids to watch all their favorite videos like we do you'll be begging them to watch something else. I can't explain why I'd rather watch Elmo or Thomas the Train a million times than this video but it's true. However, it's for the kids.........right?! I plan to order a few more in the series since he likes helicopters and trains. Maybe that will give me and my husband a bit of variety!
Our son's favorite video April 21, 2001 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Our son received this as a gift when he was 18 months old. He is now 23 months old and it has been his favorite video for about 4 months. Once we put it in he is glued to the television. This was our first video in this series, so we actually like the new Dave better than the old one. We have since gotten There Goes a Train and There Goes a Firetruck, but our son loses interest in them about halfway through. While they are excellent videos also, I think the content on the firetruck one is a bit too involved for our son right now, and the train one focuses too long on the inside of the train. Our son loves watching big vehicles move, and There Goes a Tractor has plenty of that.
There Goes a Tractor not what was expected May 2, 2001 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This video, part of a popular series, was rather disappointing in comparison with the others. It would have been titled more correctly if it had said "Learn About Farming." My son 4-year-old, who loves tractors, lost interest in this video after only 10 minutes and when he was asked why he didn't want to watch he said "it doesn't have many tractors". The host is also somewhat annoying in his presentation, even for a 4-year-old.
Where is the real Dave??? August 24, 2003 Hank Fan (Boston, MA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
My son loves the "There goes a" video series, especially the humor of Dave and sometimes Becky. He was really excited to watch this new video until he realized Dave, the old Dave, had been replaced. What a disappointment. I guess it's the older videos for us.
