Amazon.com The third season was the charm for one of HBO's gold standard series, which earned its first Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series to go along with its Golden Globes for Best Comedy Series and Best Actress (Sarah Jessica Parker). The writing is as sharp as ever, with more trendy product placement than a Bret Easton Ellis novel and ribald banter that's a cross between the Algonquin Round Table and the Friars Club. One of this season's two principal story arcs concerned hapless-in-love Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and her pursuit of a husband; enter (if only...) Kyle McLachlan as the unfortunately impotent Trey. Meanwhile, sex columnist Carrie has a brief but memorable fling with a politician who's golden, but not in the way she anticipated. She then sabotages her too-good-to-be-true relationship with furniture designer Aidan (John Corbett) by having an affair with Mr. Big (Chris Noth), who himself has gotten married. "Do we need drama to make a relationship work?" Carrie muses at one point. Sex and the City needs drama to make it work, and Parker and Cynthia Nixon (as career woman Miranda), this ensemble's better half, give the show its pulsating heart as they wrestle with commitment and, in the episode "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," sadder-but-wiser breakups. On the lighter side, the sexual dalliances of "rude and politically incorrect" Samantha (Kim Cattrall) provide great fodder for comedy. Like I Love Lucy, the series benefited from a brief change of scenery with a three-episode jaunt to Los Angeles, where Carrie and company encountered, among others, Matthew McConaughey, Vince Vaughn, Hugh Hefner, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. At its best, to quote one character, Sex and the City is "sharp, edgy, brutal at times, always a little juicy." It may be "very New York," but the sex and relationship issues it tackles are universal. For its devoted fans, the release of this 18-episode, three-disc set is, to quote Gellar's clueless Hollywood junior development exec, "chick flick big." --Donald Liebenson
From the Back Cover Join Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her friends Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis), and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) as they do weddings, funerals, and Bat Mitzvahs; Staten Island, the meat-packing district, and the Playboy Mansion. The third season fittingly includes a host of "A-list" celebrity guest appearances, including Carrie Fisher, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Hugh Hefner, Donovan Leitch, Matthew McConaughey, Alanis Morissette, and Vince Vaughn. So get ready to cross the velvet ropes and enter a world of... Sex and the City.

Young and Professional--- please apply here. March 20, 2002 Jaq Goldstein (New York, New York) 83 out of 119 found this review helpful
I love Sex and the City. SJP has said on many occasions that the city is the 5th lady. I agree. The show is shot in the most beautiful place in the world. (can you tell I am a native?)So, it's fitting that the cast reflects the beauty of the city. I love the wonderful writing and the complexity of the characters. It's shows like this that remind the female population that being single isn't a crime and you can be young, sexual and a professional without feeling like maybe the clock is ticking. I have my current boy friend so hooked, that I think that he has watched the DVD's more than I have. I own the first two seasons and love them. I agree with the others that the third is better than the first two. And I sure can't wait for the 4th to be released. So Enjoy city dwellers and always remember, you might find your own, Mr. Big....
Yes Ladies, Even the Guys Watch it... September 30, 2002 John NY (ny, ny United States) 28 out of 35 found this review helpful
Don't let anyone fool you! I am a 25 yr old man from NYC and every sunday night, I gather around the television with 4 or 5 close friends (many of them men)and wait for our favorite mambo jingle to come on, and Carrie's ballerina dress. This show is the perfect blend of comedy and therapy. I have much to reflect on after an episode about my own relationships and the foolishness involved. The questions asked as Carrie writes her articles (the basis for her narration in the series)provide quite stimulating conversation long after the episode has ended. If you are reading this article, i am sure you have already seen seasons 1 and 2, and really don't need me to urge you to buy this season. However, this season is a favorite of mine because it Introduces Aiden, which could be the perfect guy for Carrie, but--well, you will see for yourself. This DVD is a great way to get your friends hooked if they havent been already. As a matter of fact, 4 of my friends got hooked through the DVD series and not by watching it as it came out on HBO. Enjoy for yourself, and raise your martini high!
Sex,cosmopotitans,shoes,NY,Chris Noth...what more do u want? March 17, 2002 23 out of 35 found this review helpful
This season is THE season to see! The characters are more defined.....making them more "real" feeling this season and the writing is simply hilarious. My favorite character is Big a classic Hollywood looking wealthy man that just is too smooth for his own good. The chemistry between Big (Chris Noth) and Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) is at times very romantic and at times very frustrating. Spend a little money on this dvd......you won't regret it.
Maybe I didn't give it a sufficient chance, but ... May 22, 2002 Maine Writer (Maine, USA) 19 out of 49 found this review helpful
I found the few episodes I managed to sit through unimaginative, the characters truly unlikeable. And maybe that's the point--these are men and women you laugh at, not with. That the humor of this show is derisive and cynical, showing how superficial many lives really are--and how empty and materialistic our culture has become. If that's the point, I get it. If that isn't the point (as many of the positive reviewers suggest), then be afraid. Be very afraid. If this is "real life" for many people, then things are far worse than I ever imagined. The main characters do a good job of mimicking the most shallow, self-absorbed, vain, and misdirected women I know. They are obsessed with sex talk and sex, have perilously low self-esteem, have little or no intellectual depth, and, in the end, are leading absolutely meaningless lives. Do they discuss significant ideas? No. Do they care more about clothing and money than emotional depth? Yes. They make the empty-headed "Friends" seem complex in comparison. At least they can manage childish relationships with equally empty-headed men blended together with low-brow stupidity. I know this isn't meant to be Shakespeare, but there is only so much of it that you can watch. There is enough of this "humor" in real life. (It is quite sad, really, to see the number of female reviewers who claim that this show comes close to describing their "urban" lives.) They should have a reunion show when these women are in their early sixties. Health problems beginning to mount. Age taking its toll. A few lost jobs. No real relationships in sight. Angst, alienation, and anomie setting in? (Forget it. These folks wouldn't get it if it hit them over the head with a two-by-four.) Endless plastic surgery. Money running out. Now, might that be worth a chuckle? No, not really. In a culture where the highest rated television shows are Friends and Survivor, the popularity of this show is hardly surprising. Sad, but not a shock.

If you have never seen Sex and the City you better act now. This is the best Woman show I have ever watched. This is really about how Women are and what we are thinking about. This DVD should be great. I have season 1 and 2 and can't wait to add season 3 to my collection.
