When I was a teenager I went to the theater finding out that the movie we planned to see was changed, anyway we decided to stay and waiting fro the new movie The Promise appeared on screen...What a lovely one!!! OMG!! I never never forgot it...I tried to find a copie some years ago and almost payed 85 bucks for it, but finally was stock out... couple of months ago I ordered it thru here ( Amazon) and what a surprise I received a wrong one (made in china)I was frustrated....I'll wait for the DVD version...hope it comes before I pass out...lol (Lourdes Rendon)

5 out of 5 stars Joy to watch   January 15, 2007

Always remembered this movie. What a gem, what a joy to watch. This is one of the best romance movies to date. Falls in the same category as Madam X with Lana Turner. Please bring it out on DVD. Highly recommended for the romantic at hart.

5 out of 5 stars *****Fantastic Movie! True Romance at its Very Best!   August 23, 2006

I saw this movie last week for the first time since it first came out. Still as emotionally powerful. Stephen Collins-of course-went on to become a major television star for over ten years. Kathleen Quinlan is stunningly beautiful. Of course, when the movie starts(before the car accident) she is a loving ugly duckling-that's what makes the movie. Larry Luckinbill and Beatrice Straight also give incredible supporting performances.

This movie moves-and moves fast, from one transition to another.

An amazing musical soundtrack supports it all.

San Francisco makes an interesting backdrop, but you wouldn't notice it much once the plot gets going. This movie isn't just fantastic, it's an emotional throwback to a time when our feelings were king and queen and high technology just didn't exist. The budget is low, the script so ordinary-and that's what makes The Promise all the more extraordinary. It's okay to cry, it's okay to love and it's okay to be yourself in love-all major themes within this movie that still ring true today. The Promise doesn't date, and that what makes this movie's magic lesson of love and commitment all the more extraordinary even today.

Solid acting here by Collins, whose performance landed him the lead role in the Star Trek movie, his next film.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing like the book   July 12, 2006

This movie was horrible! It had none of the passion that the book held. After reading the book I couldn't wait to see this movie and was very disappointed. They really should do a remake of this movie since this one stunk!

The Promise is my all-time favorite romantic movie. My wife's, too. Our copy cost us $95.00, and it's worth every penny! This is a low budget, unknown stars (at the time), movie with such a great story that nothing else matters. For years, I've been furious with Leonard Maltin for the scathing review his staff wrote for this priceless film. I truly believe that none of them actually watched the movie. What a thrill it is to find out now that there are so many other people out there who feel as we do. After all, a truly great movie is one that leaves us feeling great, no matter how many times we've seen it!! Give it another chance, Leonard...
