Editorial Reviews:

Description
Based on the best-selling novel by award-winning writer, Minette Walters. The Ice House is an enthralling, tangled web of secrets and murder.

When the gardener informs the ladies of the house, Phoebe Maybury (Penny Downie) and her two friends, that he has found a dead body in the ice house, Chief Inspector Walsh (Corin Redgrave) and Sergeant McLoughlin (Daniel Craig) are called to the scene. Walsh is excited because ten years ago he led an investigation into the disappearance of Phoebe's husband at this house, but the body was never found. He suspects that they've finally found their missing man and that Phoebe is the murderess. But the investigation takes some twists and turns, and Sergeant McLoughlin finds himself increasingly attracted to one of the suspects. Will the mystery behind the disappearance of Phoebe Maybury's husband be solved at last?

5 out of 5 stars Keeps you guessing from beginning to end   September 18, 2002

Saw the first half on PBS some years back, but could never catch the second half. I was intrigued enough to buy it if only to see who-done-it. In one week, I watched it six times. No kidding. And every time, I saw something I'd missed in any of the previous viewings. I'm fairly astute, but this movie is one in which keen detail is tantamount, and you could easily miss something important. This is by far, the finest piece of writing, acting, and cinematography of late in the murder/mystery genre. No hype, no special fx, just an excellent mystery with straight forward acting. I've recommended the movie to everyone. As a note, I also bought the book (read it in one night), and the adaptation was dead on except for one character's hair color. Buy the movie AND read the book. In fact, see anything that Minette Walters has written and that has been adapted to the screen, and read the mysteries. I only wish this was on dvd.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent version of Minette Walter's book   August 14, 2001

This 3 hour video is a great rendering of the book. The characters are finely drawn and the tension is exellently portrayed. An especially fine performance is made by the young actor who plays Jonathan, Phoebe's son. The final confrontation is interesting and unexpected. Another wonderful BBC production!

5 out of 5 stars Great BBC Mystery - Where's the DVD??   July 23, 2006

Like other reviewers, I first caught The Ice House on a Sunday night edition of PBS' "Mystery" and absolutely loved it. Great story, good acting and Daniel Craig definitely establishes his sort of quirky but down-to-earth hunk cred. I'd love to own the film, but I'm trying to hold out for the DVD. Come on, guys, he's James Bond now. Can't you do a tie-in or something?

4 out of 5 stars Early Craig   February 1, 2006

The only regret is that this mystery is not offered on DVD. the Ice House is up to the usual British standard and very entertaining. Daniel Craig is as sexy as ever. The brogue requires some adjustment of your receptors.

5 out of 5 stars why isn't it on dvd??   April 27, 2006

I first saw The Ice House about 7 years ago when it was shown on British tv. I taped it and watched it again and again and again. The characters are deliciously brought to life and you really feel all they are feeling. The plot grabs you and you need to find out what happens. The incidental love story between Andy McLaughlin (Daniel Craig) and Anne Catrell(Kitty Aldridge)is wonderfully done. It is avaialable on DVD over in the UK, but not in the USA. WHY NOT?? Surely with Daniel Craig becomming the new James Bond, we deserve to see it on DVD format over here.
