4 out of 5 stars "Life is clear for me up there alone.."   March 6, 2008
C. Rocklein
"In the sky I found, even in my enemies, courage, honour and chivalry. On the ground..." he shrughs his shoulders.

Somewhat interesting performances from Redford and Sarandon, etc. It tried to capture something of the post WWI era (late 20s early 30s) and specifically within that era, the story of a few ex-fighter pilots trying to make it in civilian life as aerial acrobats and stunt flyers.

In a world where mundane survival has seemed to trivialize everything then, the theme was in reminicing about a time when life seemed to have had more meaning.

There was nothing bad about this movie. I found it to be fairly interesting, quaint, but not riviting. One may dare say a bit 'slow' at times. Still, it was produced well and would probably appeal to pilots or fans of early airplanes (or early Redford). Worth a watch, but not the most intriguing movie I ever saw.

5 out of 5 stars Pepper - with just the Right Salt   October 18, 2007
N. L. Bronzan (Monument, Colorado)
This review is hardly objective: "The Great Waldo Pepper" is my favorite movie of all-time.

Nor am I a hyper-critical/analytical movie-viewer: I simply like the story and characterizations.

The realistic air sequences - of which there are many - are the best.

The younger Redford, Sarandon and Svenson are all just too cute.

If ever there was a classic movie that begs to be restored to its original grandeur, this is it! Please make a state-of-the-art anamorphic transfer with fresh Dolby Digital sound! This movie deserves it! Look at the beautiful new print of The Sting. That is what is needed.

From a time when movies were more good acting and less special effects with shock factor.

Wonderful movie if you are a pilot or just enjoy areoplanes. Good film in general. I wish they would re-release this so its not so hard to find. As of right now beware DVD's as they are likely poor quality rips.

Its the kind of movie that leaves you feeling good at the end.
