I own this game... And it owns me! October 6, 2002 DarkDan (Norman, OK United States) 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
Unlike everyone else who reviewed this, I actually own this game for the X-box! ;-) Although I am a racing purist, NFS2: Hot Pursuit offers a level of excitement and challenge not offered in other console racing titles. Because (as the name implies) you are being pursued by cops while in a race to the finish, you have to avoid patrol cars, spike strips, road blocks, and helicopters that drop explosives in your path while trying to finish first amoungst the supercars you're racing against. In addition to the impressive array of vehicles (NOTE: The cops get supercars too, so you can expect to be chased by Lamborghini and Dodge Viper police vehicles!), the tracks are interesting and fun. Shortcuts and reverse modes make them exciting to play over and over again, and the rewards for winning (you earn money to unlock special NFS editions of the super cars) make the game "replayabilty" absolultely top-notch. Short answer: If you like the Need for Speed series, you'll love this X-box port. If you haven't heard of NFS, but enjoy driving games that offer more than just a start-to-finish line challenge, this is the title for you.
best racing game... September 23, 2002 13 out of 19 found this review helpful
EA's NFS series are pretty much the only racing games I play (with the xception of Rallisport Challenge). It is not a typical boring racer where you have start with a [cruddy] car, race on dull tracks, earn money and then race again and again until it gets any more fun when you get a decent car. In Hot Pursuit 2, you start off with one of the hottest dream cars on the globe. You get to try them out on open road, with lots of cops, copters, and other hazards. It gets much more intense than other racers (say GT3 or Sega GT).
Worth Buying! October 18, 2002 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I had my doubts about this game, but I went ahead and bought from best buy. The game is a lot funner than I thought. The game is nice and arcadey, but with a realistic feel. not as arcadey as rush. You start off with a few cars in single challenge mode, but as you work your way through the Hot Pursuit and Championship, you earn more and more points and can buy more cars with those points. There are many supercars to choose from like the Lamborghini Diablo, Lamborghini Murcielago, McLaren F1, Ferarri F50 and many others. The gameplay is fast and relatively easy. You get a good steady framerate at high speeds and the cops act realistic, maybe too much, at times. I have a few minor complaints, though. When you skid up against the side of something, its like there is superglue or the side of your car and you hit it or it messes you up. Also the po pos or police can be a little hard on you when you have a slower car as they constantly turn you around and make you run into walls, which can get unbearably annoying at times of high pressure like tournaments... The jump camera that comes on when you hit a high jump is fun to watch, though and if you hit something going fast enough you can really gets some good air. i recommend this game to anyone who likes a little arcadey racing.
A Good Buy May 11, 2003 Michael Bonitatibus (Tampa, FL United States) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 is an excellent game if you like racing games. The speeds you can reach are insane and the cars handle very well. The cars EA picked for the game are excellent. The coolest car is definitly the McLaren F1. I've played almost every Electronic Arts racing game and they are definitly a gaming company to respect. This game definitly lives up to the standards of the Need for Speed series. The graphics are very good and the tracks are very in depth and have lots of detail. The hot pursuit and event trees are very good. I've found myself going through them over and over and over, trying to rack up as many points as I can. However, there are a few things I don't like. One is that you can't upgrade any of the cars with parts. But this isn't that big of a problem. The cool slow-motion view you get when getting good amounts of air time is neat, but can be annoying if you have a curve ahead and could mess you up. The cars have damage which is somewhat realistic visually, but you have to crash a lot of times just to see even the smallest dent. The cops in the game are easy, but only if you have a fast car. I've also noticed that the cops seem to have a "boost of speed" if they're far behind. You could actually have a faster car than the cop, but the cop would catch up to you extremely fast. The police also have a heleicopter, but is really stupid: it drops barrels that make you flip up in the air, pretty cool to watch, but not so for you're standings in the race. Overall, this is an excellent game, and I would definitly reccomend it to anyone who likes racing.
