A bit out of date, but still a very good game, March 22, 2006 Cool Breeze (Oregon) 79 out of 88 found this review helpful
The Sims is the bestselling computer game of all time, worldwide. It's still quite popular and there is a lot of support available from the manufacturer and fan sites. This is a "real time" game and there are problems with time management. For instance - an hour isn't enough time for a sim to get out of bed, relieve herself, shower, eat and catch a ride to work, of course finding a way around this and other similar problems can be enjoyable. Next, the sims themselves often have problems finding a path to an object you want them to use and if another sim is in the way they frequently can't find a way around them. This makes the time management problem worse. The game has a lot of little "quirks", like when they set food on a corner cabinet they can't reach it to eat it or even clean it up. So you either don't make corner cabinets or you put lamps or decorations on them. Sometimes 2 sims will block a doorway and get stuck, then you have to install a temporary second door or take out a wall so they can find a way around each other or they will stay there till they die. Having a large lot with a big house and a lot of things on it, with a family and a pet or two can really slow down most systems a lot. So this probably seems like too many problems, but really they become part of the charm of the game, finding ways to resolve them is fun. It's a detail oriented game that makes you keep track of multiple factors on multiple characters at the same time, challenging you to keep them fed, entertained, clean, rested, comforted, happy with their environment and socialized all while managing a career and relationships and earning enough money to make it all possible. You discover little tricks like using double doorways and stairways. You learn which objects help to save time and keep them happy. Building and furnishing their homes is fun in itself and is almost like a seperate game within the game. This is a good game and very entertaining. I gave it 4 stars overall because sometimes it can become frustrating.
One Of The Most Fun Games EVER! April 30, 2006 Chris H. (,OH,U.S.A.) 73 out of 82 found this review helpful
I have the Sims and all the expansion packs, except Super Star which I gave to my grown daughter. We were hooked for years and had a blast with our simmies. It is not true there is nothing you can do about them or items getting"stuck" there is a cheat"move objects on" that you can do when you are in the buy or build mode that allows you to move anything, even pick up your sim and move it! When accomplished you do "move objects off". Plus there is a fan-site-made "hacked" item you can buy with sim money and download so you can do the same thing when you are downtown,if you have the Hot Date expansion pack. There are lots of "cheat" codes to make the game easier if one needs to,and you can learn all about them on the Sims forum. This game is a dollhouse, and toybox all in one. The building capabilities and interior/exterior design are awesome. My daughter and I built and decorated dream homes for our sims, like we could never dream of owning, even down to the wallpapers, flooring, exterior sidings,or brick, and paintings! We had hundreds and hundreds of Maxis and fan-made items downloaded for our games. It was a thrill just checking out the new items our favorite fan sites had to offer, like a canopy bedroom set,or wallpaper,or a picket fence, or even some beautiful lanscape plants. It is also fun,and sometimes downright hilarious to see your sim's reactions to the new(not replacement, however) items you give them!I decided to order this so I only have to install 2 discs,(edit:sorry,it is 4 discs) on my new PC,instead of 11! Can't wait until it arrives and I can start creating sims and their homes again.Of course I always make myself and friends and family, but we have perfect bodies in the game,LOL! You can make skinny or fat sims too,but there are not as many cool clothes available for them. BTW,I noticed one reviewer said the money cheat "motherlode" did not work for this.No wonder, the money cheat is not motherlode for the original sims, it is rosebud! Top-selling computer game of all time, says it all. Countless Sims-Addicts out there for sure. I cannot give the same praise for Sim2,which is eye-candy,but very exasperating as disheartening to play,It is a race against the clock/death,to accomplish any goals with your sims in this game because they age quickly and die,not enough time to really develop and have fun with them, unless you turn aging off,but all sims outside that house keep aging. I disliked it so much that I un-installed it,and have never looked back! Stick with TS1 to begin, anyway and find out why it is the top selling game. One tip: I unplug my cable modem so my anti-virus and instant messenger is disabled when I play. I would advise everyone to do the same and play "off-line",to avoid crashes.
The Edition That Should Have Been Sold First August 25, 2006 Kevin R. Haughn (San Diego, CA) 41 out of 47 found this review helpful
The Sims, as most of us who have played it know, is a classic game. Wil Wright initially sought out to produce a "home builder" game that let users play with architectural concepts. Of course, he simmed it up and went platinum. There was no better game than The Sims - certainly for its genre (if another games exists outside of The Sims) - until the inevitable happened... the sequel came out. The Sims Complete Edition is the marketing ploy to get consumers in the Sims market to drop that last $40 we hadn't yet. More so, it was to get simmers to reconcile the fact that they couldn't afford all those expansions over the years, but now is their last chance. (Marketing!) They are still testing our impulses, trying to sneak past our practicality. Almost all PC game developers are undertaking the same marketing campaign: leave out material for the base game, then compile it later for a "separate" product, ergo the expansion packs. (PC game developers are getting bolder every year.) I bet you spent over $100 on The Sims already trying to expand it. What's another $40, Maxis asks, to have it all? The Sims Complete Edition is an excellent example of what video game producers are doing with PC gamers nowadays. Well, my friends, my only suggestion in this whole review is that you TRY to get away from what I call the "Mosquito Effect." You see the glowing light and you drone right into it. I've been there - I know. Then you wonder why you eat top ramen and you have your friends pick you up when you go out to parties. Suggestion: wait until EVERY game you know hits its sequel, THEN buy the completed first game. It will be fully expanded and cost you a fraction of the overall price. I am sure this review won't amount to a hill of beans, but if you ever want to know where your money is going, or how PC game developers succeed nowadays, use The Sims Complete Edition as a reference. It is still one of the best games of all time, of course, but we also got played in the process! Just imagine this... It is the late 1990s. Maxis produces a fine game. It includes pets, magic, all kinds of carpet and wallpaper, and all sorts of furniture and little goodies. It cost you $250. Now imagine this... It is the 2000s. That same product will cost you $40. Aren't you glad you waited?
This is the disc you need!!! January 18, 2006 Jermaine (Ireland) 30 out of 31 found this review helpful
I really was amazed to see how cheap this product was. It's even cheaper than the Triple Deluxe and it was limited edition, sos I got it right away!! OMG where to start? Who hasnt heard of the Sims? its one of those games that you either love or hate. I love it, of course. I haev heard some people say that you cannot install certain expansion packs and that you must install the whole lot- not true. You can choose to download whichever expansion pack you want. I will give you a brief note on each expansion pack: 1) Livin it Up- lots of new items, new careers and new skins. Nothing amazing about this one. 2) House Party: very fun with items such as dance stage, buffet and lots more. really fun and you can have HUGE parties, which is an easy way to make friends. 3) Unleashed: If you like pets this one is for you. Cute, cuddly little cats and dogs. They become part of your family, they can have babies. However they take some time to train and I never bother adopting one! 4) Vacation: very fun but not enough places to visit. There are 3 themes: beach, snow and lake. Fun to go now and then. 5)Hot Date: romance. i love the restaurants they feel so real. You order your food, eat, hang out, make love...everything. Cool. 6) SUPERSTAR: my FAVORITE. This expansion pack is really amazing! You live the life of a Superstar -all the good and all the bad! did I say bad? yes I did. You get this REALLY annoying OBSESSED FAN who follows you around 24/7. I mean it. Go to Hot Date, Vacation, or anywhere, he'll be there waiting for you. Its creepy and sometimes REALLY annoying, but I think its realistic in a way that you cant be a star without fans. You can sign autograph, win Grammys Awards, get a Limo to downtown, Sing, Dance, make a music video, have tons of fans!!! So much!! This is the best expansion pack. YOU need it!! If you like the Famous life then this is really gonna blow you away. Make yourself a star!! However, you need to keep up with the business worl if you wanna be a star, give up your job, have TONS of famous friends, be VERY skilled. Then you will earn your life as a star. Its really hard, though. &)Makin' Magic: this one is ok. fun and creepy but not all to my liking. lots of new characters/ interactions and stuff. + You get a create a sim disc where you obviously create a sim. very cool. OVERALL you need this excellent package!! Its so cheap and well worth it. if you never enjoyed the sims, avoid this!!
The Best Of The Best Game Of All Time! November 13, 2005 William Barnhart (Eureka, CA) 22 out of 28 found this review helpful
This is the most awsome version they've come out with (It's about time Maxis) I had already "Compiled" all 8 of my ORIGINAL CDs into a DVD, but then they got stolen by someone. So now I was stuck with a copy. I wanted an original version CD(s), but I wasn't gonna pay $80+ for all of them! The nMAxis came out with this one, and I saw it & couldn't pass it us. My wish had come true! For someone who doesn't have all of "the sims", this is perfect for them for 1/2 of what it used to cost ($39.99 or so) I'm sure when "The Sims 2" is finished it'll be done the same way after "The Sims 3" is released.
