SNK ARCADE CLASSICS: VOLUME 1 will include the following SNK games:

  • ART OF FIGHTING - The first game in SNK's second fighting-game franchise, set in the same universe as FATAL FURY. It was the first fighting game by SNK to feature the character designs of former SNK illustrator Shinkiro, who would go on to do the character designs for the later Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters games.
  • BASEBALL STARS 2 - The sequel to SNK's popular baseball arcade game. Players can create leagues of up to 125 games (6 teams playing each other 25 times) and view statistics such as League Standings, Average, Home Runs, Runs Batted In, Earned Run Average, Wins and Saves. Players can fire players and upgrade them using the same 15-point system introduced in the original Baseball Stars.
  • BURNING FIGHT - New York detectives battle organized crime in this fighter. Duke and Billy, two popular and renowned New York City Police detectives, are hot on the trail of a dangerous Japanese crime syndicate. Their investigation has led them to the mean streets of Japan where they meet a police officer and martial arts expert named Ryu. Ryu agrees to join the NYPD detectives as they track down the crime syndicate bosses and end their reign of terror once and for all.
  • FATAL FURY - First released in 1991, FATAL FURY introduced the two-plane fighting system. The main fighting game feature that the original Fatal Fury was known for was the two-plane system. Characters would fight from two different planes, and by stepping between the planes, attacks could be dodged with ease.
  • KING OF FIGHTERS '94 - The first game in the popular KING OF FIGHTERS series. King of Fighters '94 introduces the series' signature 3-man team system. Instead of a simple one-on-one, two round fight system, a player chooses a team of three characters, then determines the order to play them in. Each fight consists of up to 5 rounds, and each round ends when one of the two fighters is knocked out; the remaining fighter stays and faces the opponent's next character. A fight is won when one of the two players loses the last of their three fighters.
  • KING OF THE MONSTERS - In KING OF THE MONSTERS, giant monsters fight for power in epic battles. Players get to choose any one of six monsters (four in the ports) for battle, and two players can join forces to fight the monsters together. Battles end when one of the monsters is pinned for a three count or if time expires (in which case the player loses).
  • LAST RESORT - A challenging futuristic shooter. The gameplay was heavily inspired by R-Type and its system of pod attached to the player's ship. Its first level remained memorable for its homage to the futuristic Neo-Tokyo depicted in the anime Akira.
  • MAGICIAN LORD - Players help the wizard Elta save his homeworld in this platformer. The player controls the wizard Elta, the last magician lord, on his quest to save his homeland from the evil Gul-Agieze who plans to resurrect the god of destruction using eight tomes of mystical power. As Elta the player must battle through eight levels to find each of the tomes before he can reach the final battle and seal away the evil god once again.
  • METAL SLUG - This run-and-gun side-scroller was the first in the popular series. It's widely known for its sense of humor, extremely fluid hand-drawn animation, and fast paced two-player action.
  • NEO TURF MASTERS - A golf game which debuted on the Neo Geo Pocket Color in 1999. The game included a VS mode and three single player modes, as well as having six players to choose from. You played in one of three countries, USA, Japan and Germany.
  • SAMURAI SHODOWN - Set in the 18th century, SAMURAI SHODOWN features bladed-weapon combat and an international cast of characters.
  • SENGOKU - In SENGOKU, players face off against undead feudal Japanese armies.
  • SHOCK TROOPERS - In this run-and-gun adventure, players save a scientist and his granddaughter from the Bloody Scorpions.
  • SUPER SIDEKICKS 3 - A soccer game featuring teams from all over the world.
  • TOP HUNTER - Bounty hunters protect colonists from space pirates in this futuristic action game.
  • WORLD HEROES - This classic fighter pits players against historical figures in a tournament enabled by time travel.

"With 16 of our most beloved games, SNK ARCADE CLASSICS: VOLUME 1 is a must-have addition to any arcade fan's collection," said Ben Herman, president of SNK PLAYMORE USA CORPORATION. "It's the most comprehensive SNK compilation to date."

2 out of 5 stars SNK Arcade Classics PS2   May 7, 2008

Hello fellow Neo Geo and SNK fans.

Well we all waited for it.

Looked to be amazing!

Its not.

It fails on many many levels.

The good news first.

You get 15 games!

Neat intro and the design is pretty cool overall.

The bad news......yikes.

Every game on here is busted. There is either slowdown up the wazoo(KOF94) or there is this weird almost video refresh problem(fire up Magician Lord to see it really go nuts)

Samurai Showdown has the blood but the sound is jacked up big time.

ShockTroopers is the 1 man rom.

Baseball Stars 2 runs almost perfect but they still messed this up. Its a strange version of the ROM where all of the teams have different names(Korean or Euro I am guessing)

The save option takes about 10-12 seconds everytime you change an option.
I cant believe how bad the emulation is on this.
I think they tried a little too hard to copy the way the Capcom Collections are and that "backend" is eating up too much resources and the games themselves are suffering.

Overall yeah it was only $[...] US but I really didnt expect the games to run and look like crap on here when all of the previous collections run perfect(minus Metal Slug Collection).

4 out of 5 stars More than solid collection   May 6, 2008

SNK Playmore has been releasing budget priced compilation discs on the PS2 of their various franchises for a while now, and SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 continues the tradition. The first thing you'll notice is that, finally, SNK has changed up the menu screen, and added goals to each of the 16 games that when completed will unlock new features and extras. Featured here in this collection are titles found on previous collections like the first installments of Art of Fighting, World Heroes, Metal Slug, and Fatal Fury; but there are some real gems to be found here as well. Baseball Stars 2, King of the Monsters, King of Fighters '94, Samurai Shodown, Last Resort, Top Hunter, and Shock Troopers are all wonderful experiences that make this compilation worth picking up alone. Some games aren't all that special, like Burning Fight, while others are decent enough like Super Sidekicks 3 and Sengoku. That being said, you won't find any bad games in this collection, but what really hurts it are some technical issues. Shock Troopers and King of the Monsters specifically suffer from some very noticable slowdown, while Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, World Heroes, and Sengoku feature archaic controls that show the age of the games. Flaws aside though, you can't beat what you get with SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1: 16 games ranging from decent to great, a nice list of unlockables, and an ultra-budget price tag. All in all, if you're an SNK fan, you already know this collection is a must own.

I was one of those few who owned a Neo-Geo home system back in the 90's. Had a blast with it. But ever since selling the good ol' Neo-Geo and my prized collection of games, I've been waiting some time for a miscellaneous collection of the Neo-Geo library. Well here it is.

I am very pleased. Still remember paying 250+ plus for one new game. In this collection, you get 16 games for 20 bucks or less. Is everything perfect? Of course not. The speed of the load/save feature is a little slow. Wished there were more background material. Also, I would've replaced some of the older titles with newer ones. But otherwise I will not let some of the small details get in the way of my enjoyment of this collection.

My personal favorites are Neo Turf Masters, The Next Glory, and of course, Metal Slug. The oldest game in this collection is Magician Lord(1990). The newest is Shock Troopers(1997). You'll notice that the programmers really learned how to utilize the power of the system in the later years to display graphics with much more complex level of shading and detail when you compare games such as Shock Troopers or Metal Slug to a game such as Burning Fight.

Hopefully, SNK Playmore will address some of the minor issues in future collections. Otherwise, don't hesitate to get yourself a copy to re-experience the "mega-power" of the Neo-Geo.

I would love to see further volumes of the SNK(Neo Geo) collection. Hopefully they will iron out some of the bugs for the second collection. As for this first collection it is a nice assortment of games that look just like the original classics. The only problem is a slowdown with some of them. I'm not sure why it happens, these are not big process hungry games. The collection itself is on the small side when compared to some of the other collections out there. The price is good and if they price a second volume the same I will probably jump at that as well.

4 out of 5 stars Uneven but still fun compilation of Neo Geo titles.   May 9, 2008
Kevin H. Dudley (Roanoke, VA (USA))
Over the last few years since SNK's surprising rise from the corporate ashes, the long running game company has released some anthologies of their more celebrated titles on their 1990's arcade game machine Neo-Geo. To date they have released World Heroes Anthology, Fatal Fury Battle Archives Vol. 1 & 2, Metal Slug Anthology and the Art of Fighting Anthology. On the horizon are a King of Fighters Anthology and a Samurai Showdown anthology (YAY!!!!).

Why am I mentioning this?

Well, it's due to the fact that SNK has included the 1st World Heroes, Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, Samurai Showdown, Art of Fighting and Metal Slug games on the new SNK Arcade Classic Vol. 1 for the PS2 and PSP. Being that this collection has 16 games on it (you have to unlock World Heroes BTW), 4 (soon to be 6) of those games are already on other anthologies that hardcore SNK fans have already bought. That leaves 10 games (Baseball Stars 2, Burning Fight, Last Resort, King of the Monsters, Magician Lord, Neo Turf Masters, Sengoku, Shock Troopers, Super Sidekicks 3, Top Hunter) that someone owning the anthologies wouldn't have already.

So who was this collection targeted to? I'm guessing the more casual classic games fan that might want more of a sampling of what SNK had to offer in the 90's instead of diving into the individual anthologies themselves for some of the gamns. However this will have some people like myself buying a collection of 16 games that has 6 on it that I already own. Also, there is the argument of people wondering why they put some sequels on here but didn't put some of the best games of other respective series on here like Fatal Fury 3, World Heroes Perfect, Samurai Showdown 2 and Metal Slug 3, Sengoku 3 instead of the 1st games of those long running seires.

One thing this entry has going for it is sheer variety. You have everything from action platform games to sports to shooters to one-on-one fighting to beat-em-ups. A few of the games can get a bit monotnous on one player (Burning Fight and Sengoku) in particular but while being far from the best types of games in that particular beat-em-up genre, since this only costs 15 bucks it makes the uneven quality of the games somewhat even out.

Being a Shooter fan, I absolutely love Last Resort and the Mercs style overhead shooter/action game Shock Troopers. We also can't forget about the action/platform masterpiece that is Magician Lord. That's still one of my favorite games of all time. Baseball Stars 2 is still one of the most fun pick-and-play baseball games of all time IMO. Turf Masters is also a lot of fun even though I'm not that much into golf games. And the original Samurai Showdown is still a classic regardless that the sequel bettered it in terms of number of characters and backgrounds.

The emulations are pretty much dead on and I found it funny that Last Resort which was plagued by slowdown on the Neo Geo has almost no slowdown on this version which makes a maddeningly at time difficult game even that much harder. Some people have complained of slowdown in certain games but to be frank I haven't seen it. Also, the version of Metal Slug on here doesn't suffer from the load times on the Anthology version, but the control does seem to lag a bit in comparison especially when the action gets really hectic.

If you're a casual fan just wanting to sample what SNK was about, this is a terrific deal to see what the NEO GEO was during it's prime. If you already have the before mentioned anthologies, then it'll depend on how much you want one or more of the 10 remaining games on here.
