4 out of 5 stars XP Compatible..with the right trick   July 23, 2008
C. Weber (Cary, IL USA)
While I never owned the original Myst, I played it many times on friends' computers. I have since played Riven under Win 98, and then upgraded to XP, and found that Myst III:Exile plays fine under XP.

So when I found out about Myst Masterpiece Edition, I wanted to buy it for a new laptop I just purchased. But I read all the customer reviews about the problems people were having getting MME to run under XP. Some people had no problems, while others couldn't get it to run.

But I found that some sellers' listings had a version of MME that only claimed to be Win 95 or Win 98 compatible. I found another group of sellers that listed a version claiming to be XP compatible, so I bought one of those.

It seemed to install properly: I chose NOT to install Direct X 6 when asked, since my new laptop already had Direct X 9. I did allow installation of Quick Time 4, since my new laptop had no Quicktime installation at all. But I still ran into the same problem many others had, it just would not run: even using compatibility mode for Win 95 or Win 98 didn't help, nor did changing to 256 colors or 640 x 480.

But then I tried to launch the Quicktime 4 player by itself, and it wouldn't run: this was the clue. I installed MME on my 10 year old PC with XP, but with Quicktime 7 already installed. Then the game worked fine. In fact, while I didn't need to run the compatibility mode for Win 95 or Win 98, just trying those options made it worse, the screen was blank, so I went back to not using the compatibility mode and it runs fine.

Some reviewers say you have to have an older version of Quicktime to get it to run under XP; my experience was just the opposite: running Quicktime 7 got it to work under XP. I doubt that the slower processor or older video card on my older PC was the answer, I think it was the newer version of Quicktime.

3 out of 5 stars A confusing game!   December 14, 2006

This game is one of the most confusing games that I have ever played. First, you are dropped onto an island with no HELPFUL hints at all. You need to read notes and crack codes to get the ship enough energy to even get off of this stupid rock! And then you have to go to an even more confusing island! You have to read all of the books in the library! Overall I think that this game is not worth your money!
