5 out of 5 stars Should be better   March 22, 2008

A fantastic follow-up to the best FPS in history. Halo 3, while it had a fantastic story, just isn't nearly as good as the Rainbow series in terms of gameplay. I'll start with the positives...

The weapons are fantastic. The way they shoot, the way they sound, and the way they look. They added a few new weapons, but I'd have liked to see a lot more. In addition, only being able to put one attachment on is a little silly. If you put high cap magazines on, for example, you can't have a scope. Unrealistic to the point of being silly.

They allow us to once again play cooperatively via split screen, online, or system link. THANK YOU! So few devs are letting co-op play get the attention it deserves, and they wonder why their games don't sell.

The new leveling system is wonderful. In the first game, the only way you could unlock the cool looking gear was to play versus online. And guess what? Not everyone likes to do that. This version allows you to get all the experience either online in versus mode, or playing the Co-op story or terrorist hunt.

Wonderful multiplayer options. You have your story, of course, and terrorist hunt, which gives the game unlimited replayability. The new online modes are cool too, if you're into that.

A few "negatives" for the game. First, the difficulty. Some of the silly reviewers found it so difficult that they gave it only one or two stars. Apparently they felt it was just that bad. The game is certainly more difficult than the first game, it sort of has to be. It had to be balanced to allow multiple human players. So although it may be a bit tough on single player, it is perfect when you have your buddies playing with you.

The player customization feature is nice, but unusually limited. In addition, the facial features like facial hair--all look the same. The pictures look different, but when its mapped onto the actual character, they don't really look any different at all. The goatee version--doesn't even have a goatee, lol. This is a mild complaint, because with camo and gear on your head, you never see the face much.

Not a lot of new weapons. Some people may not like the new "kit" system, but I think its pretty nicely done overall.

In a way it does feel like an expansion, as there aren't a lot of new features, but who cares? The first game was the best ever, and I'm perfectly happy having a bunch of new levels to play. They did add the sprint button, which is nice as well.

The BIG problem with this game was one that they claimed to have fixed after the first game. The spawning problem. For those of you who don't know, it is not uncommon at all for terrorists to appear, as if by magic, right in front of you--or behind you, in a room you had just cleared. Instead of populating the map with terrorists at the beginning, they sprinkle them in throughout--there is really no excuse for this. It is lazy game design and purely irresponsible.

And their idea of "difficulty" levels is just as bad as everyone else's. Instead of the logical thing, throwing more enemies at you, they just take away half of your ammo and reduce the number of respawns. Again, lazy design. I would have liked to change my rating from five stars to only 4, or even 3.5.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not Great   March 20, 2008

I must say, after hours of play, I am disappointed with the results. It feels a lot like RB6V (original)...I still love the game and love the series, but I found this game to be lacking as a sequel. I love the fact that you can sprint now. This is a big plus because the game feels like you are moving too slow sometimes. Going from COD4 back to RB6V feels awkward. Two totally different style of games here. Throwing grenades is a bit frustrating as it will only travel a few feet in front of you. I have also unloaded 2 clips of bullets at the enemy (sometimes) and they simply don't die. I went online to try the online play and it is severely lacking! Some maps are way too small! I do love the convention center though. The game had serious lag, most likely due to everyone signing on last night. It cleared itself up in the long run. The matches are entirely too short to the point of absurd. We played a match that literally lasted 30 seconds. It was unreal! After the match, you are forced to back out of the room and start from the menu again. It felt like a chore just to play online. I find that Team Deathmatches are the longest lasting even though there is no real objective, just kill as many people as you can. That can get boring though. I prefer longer matches in all situations. That's what make a game a great game. They just seemed to be more focused on the campaign this go around. The campaign is running smoothly and I would recommend this game only for that reason. The online play is totally frustrating and not worth the cash you pay for 360Live and the game itself. Even if you host a room and the match is over, you can only "quit game" or view stats from the match. It's ridiculous!!! I am so disappointed with the online play! I am hoping to have a good campaign to make it all worth while. The campaign is nicely done, however in very good gun battle scenes, the screen lags really bad (not online). I like the story that is being put together right now. In closing, I do like the actual game itself. That's why I gave it 4 stars. But I would give the online play 1 star only! Call of Duty has my vote (online) and I thought I would never say that when up against RB6V!!!

Campaign vote-RB6V2

Online vote-COD4

4 out of 5 stars Vegas 2?? Where is Las Vegas?   March 23, 2008

We're supposed to believe that this is a sequel to RSV1, and all of the advertisements show the casinos, etc. However, only one Act of this game is based in the traditional "Las Vegas"-style setting. Most of this game is based on standard office buildings, high-rises, etc, with none of the glitz and glamour that the original Vegas offered. I got this game on Thursday and was done with the single player missions w/in 8 hours. Definitely a short game, because they want you to play online.

Not a real improvement from the first one.

5 out of 5 stars Rainbow Six Vegas, refined   March 20, 2008

RSV2 is every bit a refinement of the original. Being a Rainbow Six game it is challenging and you will die countless times having no idea who killed you or where the shot came from. RSV2 now has three difficulty settings but casual seems a bit more challenging than it was on the first RSV.

For all intents and purposes you are essentially paying a premium to play RSV with new levels and weapons, which isn't a bad thing perse, providing the refinements and changes do add and improve the game. Playing through the single player campaign the enemy AI may be slightly improved, it is much more aggressive, with enemies running at you like kamikaze warriors at times. The AI for your squad mates seems to be much worse than the original. It is adequate but could be much better, its surprising that the AI would take a step backward when the game is developed by the same studio that made the first. They will sometimes do very stupid things, like stand in the open and get shot, or run in front of your fire. Or the best, run in front of you as you throw a grenade, which means death for the whole team. They also tend to follow you very closely which can become a pain when you can't escape enemy rounds because your guys won't get out of the way.

The ability to sprint prevents a few grenade deaths, but doesn't take anything away from the tactical shooting aspect. So those fearing that RSV was moving too far towards the COD style need not worry. The new weapons are nice and the balance between the different types seems to be better. Terrorist hunt returns, this time with the ability to take your AI squad mates with you if you want. Of course the best part of terrorist hunt is the ability to play with for of your friend online and RSV2 doesn't disappoint. You are also able to play through the entire campaign with one friend online now, with the primary player also controlling the AI squad. I preferred the ability to play through it with four people online but Ubisoft didn't ask me.

The ability to customize your character in the campaign mode is a nice touch and you can show all off the cool gear you unlock in both campaign and multiplayer now. If you unlocked everything on the original RSV multiplayer you will see all the same items here, all ready to be unlocked again at almost the same ranks. The fact that you now gain experience in both campaign and online multiplayer is an excellent addition.

I am not too sure how found I am of the ACRES system, which is they system that unlocks your weapons bases on your style of play. I enjoyed the ability to be able to use any weapon on the campaign in the original and unlocking new weapons and gear on the online mode. The fact that you have to actively kill enemies in a certain manner to unlock a weapon you might really want seems a little unneeded to me.

I have found a few bugs on my game so far. I have put almost a hundred rounds into an enemy while blind firing around a corned and just watched him dance with the rounds, which is funny but not right. Every time I have then leaned out into the door and shot he would die instantly. Several times my weapon has disappeared and left me just walking around waiting to die. It always corrects itself when you reload your check point but its annoying. And speaking of annoying the checkpoint save system is terrible, you will spend a lot of time player through the same part of a level because the developers like to give you a really hard firefight just before a save point. Which means you might play through several tough firefights, then hit the hard one, die and have to do it all again. And as much as you die in any Rainbow Six game this can become very annoying.

The original RSV was the best tactical shooter available on the 360 and RSV2 does a great job of following it up. If you are new to the series RSV2 is a great place to start, and if you love the series you are going to pick it up anyway. A few people will be disappointed at having to pay full price for a not entirely new game. But most people should be quite happy with it. I recommend it highly.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing   March 28, 2008

Sadly, this game does not live up to the first Vegas at all. Perhaps, if this had come out a year ago, it would have seemed like a great game. But for today's games, it is just sub-par.

The graphics are improved over Vegas 1, so that is one of the few pluses to the game. The other really good feature is that you can create a character and play as that character in every mode. Truly a cool feature that I hope more games will use. However, the SP mode is fairly boring and visually blah. There are also frame rate issues that crop up on a couple of levels in the SP mode. The way the story is wrapped up felt cheap and made the entire story less meaningful.

But really, most of us got R6V2 for the MP. And that is what makes it most disappointing. Because the MP guts what was great about the first Vegas. The levels are far too small. In the original, it was easy to go 20 minutes on an Attack and Defend. In the newer levels, 5 minutes seems to be the average. Because of the size of the levels, the 'tactical' aspect has been lost too. There are very few places to duck down and defend a room from. Instead, you're mostly either standing and waiting, or running and shooting wildly inaccurate weapons at each other until one of you dies. This is really the biggest letdown for me. I was looking for more of the same in MP and instead, it is not enjoyable at all. Add to that the poor matchmaking and lag and it's just not a fun experience. It's not the worst game by any means, but it doesn't live up to the first Vegas at all.

We'll be adding even more exciting features to assist you in the coming year.
