Amazon.com Product Description
The next generation of last year's highly popular Slice, the Kyocera Super Slice VM1450 is a trim, candy bar-style handset that boasts the slimmest profile in Virgin Mobile's stable. It's also one of the first handsets available from Virgin Mobile with Bluetooth wireless connectivity for communication headsets. This affordably stylish phone also features a VGA camera with 3x zoom, speakerphone, and mobile IM and email capabilities (via AOL and Yahoo!). It runs on the 1900 MHz CDMA network with Virgin Mobile's prepaid service, which requires no annual contract.

Super slim at just .039 inches thin, the Super Slice is packed with Bluetooth connectivity, IM chatting via AOL and Yahoo!, and a VGA camera.
Virgin Mobile Service
With Virgin Mobile, you pay only for the calling time you use. You can choose a plan that's based just on minutes (with rates between 10 and 20 per minute) or a monthly plan with no annual contract (with select plans offering unlimited calling on weekends and after 7 PM on weekdays). You can also choose from a variety of mobile messaging plans, which includes text and picture messaging, email, and IM (via AOL and Yahoo!). Virgin Mobile USA's national coverage is powered by the nationwide Sprint PCS network.

Virgin Mobile contributes 5 percent of profits from downloadable content to The RE*Generation, its pro-social initiative to help homeless teens, as well as provides postage-paid return envelopes in every new package for customers to recycle old phones.

Phone Features
Measuring just 0.4 inches deep with a height of 4.4 inches and width of 1.9 inches--about the width of a standard business card--the Super Slice is light on the pocket as well as the wallet, weighing a mere 2.5 ounces. The front of the phone includes a numeric keypad, four-way navigation, send/end keys, and two softkeys. The camera lens is found on the back of the phone, while the charging port and earjack for optional wired headset are found on either side.

Because the Super Slice is Bluetooth enabled, wireless communication headsets can be configured with the phone. It also incorporates a jack for an earphone as well as a speakerphone for total hands-free operation.

The Super Slice utilizes Qualcomm's CMX-enabled ring tones and screensavers, which support popular audio (MIDI, QCP, MP3, PMD, CMX) and image (PNG, JPG, GIF87, BMP) formats, all of which can be viewed on bright 1.8-inch color display (which supports 65K colors).

The Super Slice covers the messaging basics with support for sending and receiving text messages easily and quickly (Virgin Mobile text messaging charges apply). The phone fully supports Virgin Mobile's wireless content service, VirginXtras. Use the pay-per-use service to download ringtones, get content and vote in TV-based polls via the MTV area of your phone, or get jokes and updates from Comedy Central. Pick a celebrity voice to answer your voicemail, or get a Sponge Bob thought of the day. You can even use the phone to help identify the song that's currently playing on the radio or in the restaurant you're dining at. Press the Song ID command, point your phone towards a song that's playing in the room, and within minutes a text message appears identifying the song's title.

Other features include:

  • 64 MB of internal flash memory
  • Openwave 6.3.0.7 web browser
  • Polyphonic ringtones and vibrating alert
  • TTY/TTD capable; HAC rating M3
  • Voice-activated dialing
  • Calendar, calculator
  • T9 predictive text

Vital Statistics
The Super Slice weighs 2.47 ounces and measures 4.45 x 1.93 x 0.39 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 260 minutes (4.3 hours) of digital talk time, and up to 280 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the CDMA 1900 frequency.

3 out of 5 stars Nice feature set, but no contacts import   November 5, 2007

Sound quality, reception, battery life are quite good. Bluetooth seems to work reasonably well, but only for headsets - no data transfer. Image quality from the camera ranges from bad to mediocre, depending on lighting. Overall though, good feature set and performance for the price, and with no contract.

This would have merited 4 stars, except for the fact that there is no way to upload contacts to this phone. The mini-usb connector on the side is only for charging, and bluetooth is only for voice. I've dug around quite a bit online and even contacted Virgin Mobile's customer support. There is simply no way to get my ~240 contacts on this phone other than typing them all in manually. Quite a few customers are expressing frustration about this in online forums.

The inability to import contacts seems a casualty of VM's need to lock down this phone. Photos can't be retrieved except by paying to send them via an MMS. Ringtones and wallpapers cannot be uploaded unless purchased through Virgin. Photos taken by the phone CAN be used as wallpaper, though. Virgin apparently feels that allowing any data connection to the phone from the customer's PC, even for transferring contacts, will make it easier to develop ways to upload ringtones without paying for them.

Also, add $2.50 to the price of this phone to upload a decent ringtone to it. The default tones are deliberately obnoxious.

4 out of 5 stars Better than I expected   January 28, 2008

All of the reviews on here were only knocking things that don't really matter to me (no way of importing contacts, bluetooth for headsets only, can't import ringtones with USB).I read them thinking 1) this is a $50 phone, what do you expect?? and 2) if that's the only problems with this phone, I want it!

Here's my take on it all after owning this phone for a week (and being new to Virgin Mobile)...

The phone is very slim and light. I can barely feel it in my pocket. The only downside to this (and the reason I took 1 star away) is the shell of the phone is a cheap-feeling plastic. It seems to be fine if you don't abuse your phone (I don't), but it doesn't seem like it would be very durable. Minor knock.

As another reviewer mentioned, you have to manually enter your contacts. I've had to do that with my last 5-6 phones (with SIM cards) because they never seem to import correctly. I just consider it part of getting a new phone. It takes 15 mins. Big deal.

Call quality is great. People seem to hear me clearly. Ringer volume is loud.

Text messaging works well. My previous phone had a qwerty keyboard for messaging and I don't miss it (surprisingly) with this phone.

User interface on the phone is intuitive and works well.

Camera takes less than stellar pictures, but that's not at all surprising to me and isn't really a big deal. It works decent enough for what it is.

My previous phone was a bulky smartphone that was a jack of all trades that wasn't good at anything -- particularly, being a phone. The super slice is a great phone that I'm thrilled with, and has enough extras to make it worthwhile. I'm pleased with my purchase and would buy one again in a heartbeat.

For $50, and not having to deal with the typical 2 year contract with the major carriers to get a deal on a phone, this really can't be beat.

3 out of 5 stars A nice enough phone, but there are limitations   November 10, 2007

I'm mostly satisfied with this phone. The size is its big benefit -- it's remarkably slim and light weight, which makes it easy to carry and unobtrusive. Real music ringtones are available for a fee from Virgin's web site if you want to customize things a bit; the camera doesn't offer much in the way of adaptability to different lighting conditions, but it's a nice feature for a relatively inexpensive phone.

The downside has to do with connectivity. If you do take a photo that you'd like to share with someone, you can't simply hook the phone up with a mini USB cable and transfer it to your computer. (I have confirmed this fact with UT Starcom, the phone's manufacturer.) The only ways to get photos off the phone involve paying fees ($.25 per image) to Virgin Mobile. Bluetooth is similarly limited to headset use.

5 out of 5 stars High quality phone with a surprisingly nice camera!   February 6, 2008

It's not just the advertised photos, this phone really does look and feel sleek and could easily pass for a more expensive phone. The screen is fairly large, bright, and clear. The date and clock is easy to see and well placed. The menus are designed well and easy to navigate. While I've seen some reviews on the web that complain of lockups I've not experienced any myself.

I'm pleasantly surprised at the quality of the camera; most net reviews I read complained about the quality of the pictures but I found them to be quite clear considering it's a VGA camera. The camera includes four resolution settings, three quality settings, five zoom settings, and four light settings, giving you quite a bit of room to adjust.

Unlike some phones, this Super Slice does allow you to change the ringtone for new text messages, voicemail messages, and pictures messages separately. The text messaging features are well made with a pre-programmed main key to easily start typing a new text message. The T9 for text messaging works very well, but the "Auto text" feature is a nice way to pre-program words, phrases, or sentences that you find yourself typing often in a text message to easily send them in other messages. There's also emoticons as a colorful added touch.

I'd recommend this phone if you're looking for a small, thin, lightweight phone with a camera, that is very reasonably priced.

Note that the Amazon product information as of 02/06/08 is incorrect.. this phone is made by UTStarcom not Kyocera.

3 out of 5 stars USB is worthless   November 12, 2007

The phone's USB port is apparently useless for anything at all. It's going back to the store for a less disabled model.
