Good Printer, HORRID Software December 17, 2007 Grey Beard (east coast USA) 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
I just bought the DP4260 to replace an older HP printer that had died. The printer is pretty good, reasonably fast, and print quality is good. I haven't had it long enough to know how fast it runs through ink cartridges. However, the software that comes with it is HORRID. It is bordering on taking over your computer to turn it into an HP monster. Periodically at random times it brings up ads. Whenever I print it works fine, then some time later after I am no longer connected to the printer and have moved to a different room and different task it decides that something is wrong with the printer, and it tries to remind me every few seconds to fix it (how it could possibly know that something is wrong when it is not even connected to the printer I don't know). I have not found any way to turn off the repeated warnings (the most obvious stuff doesn't work), nor to get any other work done, other than restarting the computer. The printer seems pretty good. However, I will not buy another HP printer and will consider throwing away this one unless they fix their software. I will try (when I get energetic) to uninstall the software that comes with this printer and try to do a custom install of only the software that is actually needed for printing. In my opinion, you should not buy this printer unless you know enough about software to load something other than the default software install that comes with the printer.
A piece of junk January 28, 2008 Teresa Gallagher (Shelton, CT USA) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I've had this printer for several months now and I think I'm done with HPs. The printer constantly, and I do mean constantly, JAMs, even though I never put in more than 10 sheets at a time. Once it jams, I have to take apart the back, clear the queue on the computer and unplug the printer for a few moments, otherwise it will not continue printing. Then there are software glitches of some kind that often require me to reboot my entire computer before it will print. Finally, there is this flimsy little pull-out shelf that is supposed to catch what prints out. It sticks WAY out. Our printer is on a typical computer desk with the printer on a shelf about where your knees are, so everyone keep wacking it or shoving it back in. Then, when someone prints something out, if it doesn't jam, it throws the pages all over the floor. I think I'm going to just throw the piece of junk away and invest in something that actually works.
Good all around printer December 23, 2007 Tim (Seattle, WA United States) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I received this printer 3 weeks ago and I have been very pleased with it. I have used it to print word documents, greeting cards, envelopes, and Avery name badge labels. The print quality is good, several of my friends who received the greeting cards printed on 7 X 10 card stock have commented on the print quality. I have not had any problems printing on different size and weight paper. The document feeder has always feed one piece of paper at a time and I have not experienced any jamming. The only drawback is that the paper tray does not hold very much paper. I would recommend this printer to anyone who is looking for a good all around printer for home or to take to college.
Can I give this product -5 stars? July 13, 2007 Melissa A. Bigenho (Rialto, CA) 9 out of 37 found this review helpful
I have never seen such a horrible printer. Unfortunately I am unlucky enough to have this printer on my desk at work. It only works when it wants to and customer service at HP only gives a temporary solution to this problem. Rarely am I so dissatisfied with any product, but this takes the cake.
What A Hunk Of Junk February 20, 2008 John P. Reeks (New Orleans, LA) 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
I purchased a Deskjet 4260 last month, thinking it would save me money and that HP was a reliable brand. I hooked it up to my Mac computer (System 10.5) and installed the drivers from the enclosed CD. There was no instruction manual included, but there is never any problem changing printers on a Mac - or so I thought. The software was all wrong. I could not access the features on the printing software that choose the correct paper, so every other page I printed came out chewed-up, as the printer thought it was dealing with heavy cardstock. I could not change it to the plain paper setting. I uninstalled and did a clean re-install with the latest drivers available on the website. I also downloaded the owner's manual and checked the support page to see if there was a reason for this problem. When I tried to print again, nothing had changed. I contacted HP Support. They suggested I repair my permissions. This takes a long time, but I did it. It also made no difference with the problem. Then HP Support told me to re-install my entire system (!). I did this, also, causing much disruption of all my settings. It had no effect on the problem. At each point, HP Support blamed the problem on my computer. I went back to square one, and did everything HP Support suggested over. This took most of a weekend, but I could not believe that this problem was insoluble. Added to this fact, I threw the box away when I installed the computer. I thought I had bought a reliable product and would not need to return it. So I could not return it to the store for a refund. I mentioned this to HP Support, but they told me I was out of luck, no help from them. After going through all this, I still could not get the printing program to work. Not only did it eat up half my printing jobs; sometimes, the printer would "disappear" from my system, and I'd have to re-install the drivers again. Although I lost everything I owned in Hurricane Katrina and am struggling to get by, I decided my time was too valuable to keep fighting such a poorly designed piece of machinery. I bought an Epson printer (more features for the same price). I plugged it into the computer and have been printing successfully without any trouble. Shame on you, Hewlett-Packard, for shoddy products and a bad support system.
