Perfect for the home office February 11, 2008 Stefan Brunner (Austin, Texas) 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
So many good things were already said. I just want to add a few things I learned while using the product over the last few months: - Only one job can happen at the same time. While you print you cannot scan or fax no matter how much memory you have. - Reviews often state that the printer has only medium color printing quality. The printer is great but the PCL driver is not. Use the Postscript driver instead, which is a little bit slower, and you get results, which I would say are similar to HP. The difference is amazing. - Scanning works perfectly. I use it to do editing on print-outs and then scan it in, and send it back to the publisher. I also use it to archive hardcopy documents. It is very fast with 400 DPI b/w scanning. The feeder pulls the paper sometimes not totally straight. - You can use standard notebook memory to increase memory. It eats old 100 Mhz SO-DIMM in up to 512MB size. - It takes a while to warm-up. Both when printing and scanning. It makes the light flicker when it warms up. It works well on a shared 15A circuit so. - I love the iFAX feature. I can send a fax, have the printer convert it to a TIFF, and send it directly out via a SMTP server without needing a extra computer. I use for sending stuff to an Oracle ERP archiving system. (It can also convert to PDF.) - It also can scan and send a document to FTP or via the Control Center to a PC or save to local USB flash. You can remote control the functions of the printer via pre-sets on the Control Center app. - It faxes and copies in b/w and color. Quality of copies is good and very fast when you use the document feeder. It appears to be faster then the small copy machines at my local copy shop. - I love that the printer both has a duplex document feeder and can also prints duplex (or scans, faxs, copies duplex). - Consumables are more expensive than for instance in a HP laser printer. However, the purchasing price of the Brother is unbeatable. Bottom line is that this product is as good as it gets in a multi-functional printer. After using it for a couple of months I am asking myself how I ever could have lived with out it. No more trips to the copy shop and savings for express mail.

Excellent value January 15, 2008 Bernard Morey (Bulleen, Vic. Australia) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
The Brother MFC-9840cdw is my second color laser printer, my second MFC and my 4th laser printer. Pros: Excellent value and produces very good results. I chose it because it does duplex printing, duplex scanning and faxing. A bonus feature for me was built-in Ethernet. I don't use the wireless feature. I use it for light business: two-sided color brochures on light card, presentation certificates, hand-outs, correspondence, &c. My wife uses it as color photocopier for art and craft things. Occasionally I use it for photo printing. It does all these things very well - I couldn't be happier with the quality of the output. Photos are not as good as a dedicated inkjet photo printer of course, but they plenty good enough; as good as an inkjet was five years ago. There's not a lot of difference between 1200dpi and 600 dpi so I mainly use the latter. It was easy to set up and connect to my home network. It's a single-pass printer so color is the same speed at mono. I've printed on light card (160gsm) and this works fine. The scanning/copying software works well and can be customized. I scan to PDF and OCR - no problems. I fax from the unit and also from the PC, where it is installed as a fax-printer. This works well and reads the Outlook Contacts list for numbers. The only thing I couldn't get it to do was fax from Word together with a document in the document feeder. Oh well - I don't do that often. Cons: It's really heavy and big. You'll need a station-wagon or utility to get it home from the shop. It won't go in an average sedan. Brother recommends a two-man lift -- and they're right. I had help in from the wagon to my office but lifted it out of the carton myself. Bad. I did my back in. The print is a little lighter and less vivid that I'm used to, but that could be fixed by tweaking the settings. I'll leave it where it is -- it's OK and probably uses less toner. First copy out when the fuser is off is fairly slow at about 30 seconds but that is typical of most printers that are not high-capacity office workhorses. Envelopes: Other have mentioned wrinkling. Adjusting the levers at the back fixes the problem. Summary: I couldn't find anything that provided this bundle of features at anything close to this price. I couldn't be happier. It's great for my business and my family likes it for general printing and copying too. I'll be adding to this review and I become more familiar with the machine.
Color Laser Multi-Function Extraordinaire December 17, 2007 JME (USA) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
Finally, a color multi-function printer that satisfies all my criteria. I'm especially satisfied about the price, speed, duplex and other printing and copying capabilities, quality color printing, color scanning, and networking capabilities. Both my Apples and PC's discovered the MFC, scan and print superbly.
Terrible Envelope Handling Capability December 8, 2007 D. Finney 11 out of 38 found this review helpful
The only way to print #10 envelopes with this machine is to load them manually via the multi-purpose tray. A whopping three-envelope capacity. Then, it mangles them as they are printed. Every one comes out wrinkled and creased. There is no paper tray that holds envelopes, and there is no optional envelope feeder. This is a very dissapointing feature of an otherwise good machine.
