4 out of 5 stars Izze - An awesome New Drink, Finally in a Can!!!   April 21, 2008

Izze All Natural Sparkling Juice, Clementine, 8.4-Ounce Cans (Pack of 24)

There are a lot of specialty soda bottlers in my area of the country, and when I saw the Izze bottled sampler packs last year I decided to give them a try. Well I'm glad I did, Izze is a great tasting product that will help to ease some of the guilt of drinking soda.

It's cool that this is made with fruit juice and sparkling water, but that still means that there's plenty of sugar in here. I personally don't mind the fruit sugar, but some might.

I have tried four of the five flavors here. Pomegranate and grapefruit were my favorites. Each tasted just like Orangina would if it were made from those fruit juices. Apple and blackberry were also good, but I definitely felt there might have been more sugary sweetness in those. Still, they are all good. I can't wait to try the Clementine next.

These new cans mean that getting a subscription from Amazon is a more worry free proposition. The only negative I can give to these cans is that they are very small for me. Perhaps that is part of the health conscious marketing effort, and I'm sure it will be enough for many people. For me, I just feel like I have to drink two of these cans to get close to one beverage.

Still there are plenty of cans in this case to last a while, and I'm sure subscribers are going to start coming in. Give it a try!

Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing, light, nice alternative to soda -- from a company with a conscience!   April 24, 2008

This review focuses on the pomegranate and grapefruit flavors of Izze.

Izze's all natural sparkling juice is a nice alternative to soda. There is no caffeine, no processed sugar, and no unnatural ingredients. It is refreshing to read the ingredients and find that I recognize every ingredient! And they are all safe!

The pomegranate juice is mixed in with a bit of grape and apple juice, to mitigate a mild (but not unpleasant) bitter citrus aftertaste, somewhat like grapefruit juice. The sparkle has a feel closer to sparkling water than to carbonated soda -- and I like that. It is a distinctive flavor -- and I like that too. I wasn't sure what to think after just one can, but after trying it a couple of times I have found that it is quite nice.

I liked the ruby red grapefruit flavor all at once -- it has the perfect grapefruit flavor, the sweet tangy delicious zing, without the bitter aftertaste of grapefruit. It is not too sweet, but just right for that grapefruit flavor fix that I like now and again. This is the perfect size container, especially for my kids who also love the grapefruit flavor. Good stuff.

What I also like is that Izze appears to be a company with a conscience. Started by a couple of friends in 2003 who liked the idea of an all natural and distinctive beverage as an alternative to soda, Izze uses their product as a platform from which to promote awareness of the Global Education Fund (and other good causes, both environmental and global) that they support.

5 out of 5 stars Great sparkling drink   April 24, 2008

Although I love apple juice, I don't normally care for apple flavored drinks. However, as many have stated, this drink is very refreshing. The apple flavor is a little tart (green apple, not red) with just enough sweet. Over the years, I have lost my taste for soda. I can rarely drink more than one glass/can because it's so sweet and doesn't quench my thirst. These Izze canned drinks are a nice alternative when I want something more than water. Both the taste and the carbonation are quite mild, and not at all overpowering. Plus, the smaller 8.4 ounce cans are the perfect size. They fit well in a lunch box, too.

Before trying this through Amazon Vine, I never had Izze before. I don't buy bottled drinks because if you don't finish them, they go flat. This makes Izze in these small cans very appealing. It has a good shelf life and stays colder than a refrigerated bottle. Since I received 24 cans, I was able to share this with my family. My niece and her fiance (in college) both love sparkling grape juice, and this is very similar. The main difference is that Izze has a softer flavor. He liked it a lot; she wished it was stronger. Another of my nieces thought it tasted like apple juice mixed with Sprite. The general consensus ampong her college friends was "fizzy and good." Potential buyers should consider that this isn't as strong as soda or many sparkling drinks. If you're looking for a kick, this isn't it. Personally, that was perfect for me.

My family also tried the clementine flavor. I didn't care for it because it tasted like Orangina. If you like that, then the clementine should appeal. I didn't and subsequently thought it was too strong (probably because I didn't like it). My sister and niece, who do like Orangina, thought the clementine was very good. Since I liked Izze so much, I decided to order the Blackberry flavor. My family all agrees that this is one of the the strongest Izze flavors we tried. It's a little tart, more like raspberry than blackberry. This is the closest to sparkling grape juice in flavor. I liked it, but do not think I could drink it as often as the apple since it is stronger. Lastly we tried pomegranate. Normally, I love pomegranate flavored stuff. However, we all agreed it was awful. It is almost bitter and leaves a strong after taste that is not pleasant. I couldn't even finish one can. It definitely comes down to flavor preference.

Also, people looking for a healthier alternative to soda should consider Izze. No, the vitamins it's "fortified" with aren't a significant amount and there is still a lot of sugar (still less than 100% juices!). But, it's better than soda with no vitamins at all! And being sweetened by juice rather than artificial flavors and sweetners is a plus. The smaller size can is a reasonable serving, too. The price is about average, with each can being less than a dollar. I like the convenience of it being shipped from Amazon rather than lugging it home from the grocery store and intend to sign up for the subscription. Overall, I highly recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars IZZE is the best alternative to HFCS laden soft drinks   April 26, 2008

Having become tired of the High Fructose Corn Syrup laden soft drinks and "fruit" drinks that permeate the drink market in the US, not to mention the "energy" drinks that are full of chemical substitutes for all the badness you can find in junk food, I started a search for the perfect alternative.

I have found that perfect alternative: IZZE Sparkling Juice! Each flavor of IZZE (Blackberry is by far my favorite, but they also offer Pomegranate, Apple, Grapefruit, and Clementine) is nothing more than 70% real fruit juice and 30% sparkling water - the perfect combination! And each can or bottle equals a serving of fruit.

On a hot day, I have found an IZZE to be a more refreshing salvation than any other drink out there.

One "negative comment": I have been drinking IZZE out of a glass bottle for a few years now, and they seem to be disappearing in favor of the canned version - though the canned version is fine, it lacks the experience that only an ice-cold GLASS bottle can brink to any drink.

3 out of 5 stars Pomegranate Izze Cans Don't Measure Up to Izze in Bottles.   April 24, 2008

Izze Sparkling Pomegranate is one of my favorite fruit sodas, and I'm rarely without a few bottles in the house. When I ordered the Sparking Pomegranate in cans, I expected it to be a very similar product. Izze sparking juices in cans are called "Izze Fortified", because, unlike the bottled drinks, they are fortified with vitamins C (6 mg), B6 (0.2 mg), and Niacin (2 mg). That's 10% of the USRDA for those vitamins, an insignificant amount. But I wondered if the addition of vitamins would change the taste or if the aluminum can would impart a minerally flavor.

I'm not sure what changed the taste, to tell the truth. Apart from the vitamins, the ingredients are the same as in bottled Izze. The vitamin C is in the form of ascorbic acid, but too scant to affect flavor. I'm not fond of very sweet things, so I love the sweet-tart taste of pomegranate. Izze Sparkling Pomegranate is the best pomegranate soda that I've tasted, because it tastes more like fresh pomegranate than pomegranate juice. The Izze Fortified Sparkling Pomegranate goes beyond tart into bitter, however, and it's not nearly as carbonated as the Izze in bottles. This is more of a slightly sparkling juice than a fruit soda.

It may be that the sweeter flavors of Izze fare better in cans. I suspect that the reduced carbonation is concentrating the pomegranate flavor to poor effect. This stuff tastes flat to me as well as bitter. Sparkling Grapefruit is another tart favorite, so I don't think I'll try that in cans either. These are small 8.4 oz cans that are easy for someone with small hands to grasp but hold significantly less beverage than a traditional 12 oz drink can. They would be great for the pool or beach, where glass bottles are prohibited, if only the contents tasted better. If you're an Izze fan, stick with the bottles. The Izze Fortified just isn't refreshing in pomegranate.
