1 out of 5 stars Piece of junk, possible fire hazard   December 6, 2002
7 out of 7 found this review helpful

I received this as a gift and it hasn't worked correctly since day 1. First of all, it does not shut off automatically, I have to actually unplug it from the wall to get it to shut off. Secondly, it immediately starts brewing as soon as water is poured in, WITHOUT turning the unit on via the switch. I don't think the on/off switch functions and I wonder why they even bothered putting it on there since the only way to control the thing is to plug it in and unplug it from the wall. This faulty switch makes me concerned about this being a fire hazard. Lastly, the space to pour water into the resevoir is so small that it's difficult to do so without spilling it all over. I called Black & Decker and they 1) didn't even attempt to troubleshoot the problems I described above and 2) wanted to charge me to send me a new unit. Overall, good idea but very poorly implemented and extremely poor quality. I hope it doesn't burn my house down as I write this review...

4 out of 5 stars Great for single cup coffee drinkers   February 18, 2005

I have used this coffee maker for over 5 years now and it's still running great. In fact, I just bought another one to take on trips & bring to the office.
Pros:
1. I don't have to make more than one serving at a time for myself and it brews straight into the mug.
2. It comes with a permanent filter but you can also use cone filters size #1 which I can buy nearby. Less messy to clean up using the paper filter. I just toss the grounds in the trash.
3. Quick to brew; done in < 5 minutes

Cons:
1. Hard to find a replacement mug of the right size or permanent filter
2. No warming element
3. The grounds do soak up some water and less comes out that you put in but it also happens with larger coffee pots (which being larger, you don't notice as much because you aren't MEASURING with the same cup you drink from).

Hints:
1. To stop grounds from floating into the water resevoir, use drip or cone ground coffee. Avoid very finely ground (i.e., espresso)
2. To avoid overflows, leave the cover off while brewing.

5 out of 5 stars Works for me   March 24, 2005

Personally, I haven't had any problems with the unit and enjoy its ease and convenience. Making sure to add the proper amount of coffee and keeping the permanent filter clean after each use, which is easily done, should prevent any problems with the grounds floating out of the filter into the water container. No measuring cup is necessary as using the coffee mug itself to fill the water chamber works just fine. Depending upon the hardness of ones water, following the occasional cleaning of the unit with white vinegar should keep steam to a minimum and the brewer in good shape for years to come. As for the difficulty in locating #1 paper-cone filters in lieu of the permanent mesh filter than comes with the unit, I too am unable to find any locally but noticed that they can be ordered on-line through Melitta.com for less than $2.00 for a package of 40.

5 out of 5 stars Black & Decker DCM18 Brew 'N Go Coffeemaker   October 16, 2005

I love this coffeemaker. So often I want a cup of coffee during the day and I don't want to waste coffee. This little pot is perfect -- makes a single cup in 2 minutes or less. It is quick, easy, no waste, and the coffee is good and hot. I would highly recommend this product.

2 out of 5 stars big disappointment   December 17, 2002

bought it..used it twice and the 'permanent filter' had come loose. the filter is glued(?) to the filter cup. upon
closer inspection, it showed that the filter was applied sloppily
at the factory causing it to be weakly held down on one side and
excessively more on the other side of the filter cup.
I also agree with other review concerning the small water reservoir
and the apparent malfunctioning power switch.
A very disappointing product from a company with serious QA
issues.
