Way Too Much Filler, but still "Required Reading" July 1, 2003 Paulindc (Washington, DC United States) 21 out of 23 found this review helpful
AD has lost its edge over the years as it has become more focused on life style rather than interior design (witness the extensive sections dedicated to world hotels and properties for sale, or look at the breezy, non-substantive "Letters to the Editor" to get an idea that AD is not taken seriously by designers).Still, AD usually presents one designer, or two, whose work is inspiring, and it's Special Editions ("before and after," or "designers' own homes") usually make up for some disappointing months.
Design for the Rich July 16, 2002 18 out of 26 found this review helpful
Architectural Digest is sometimes inspiring, but often looks like real people do not live in the spaces shown. Any signs of life (a book or two, family photos) are just not there. If you cover up the single bowl of apples or spray of flowers, the spaces look sterile and corporate. I enjoy minimalism, but even this can go too far. For affordable interior design that inspires, I suggest Dwell, Elle Decor, and Nest.
Great magazine! August 3, 2004 Mrs S. Edwards (Santa Rosa CA United States) 12 out of 15 found this review helpful
I love this magazine. Some reviewers have stated that they disliked some of the interiors. That's fine and fun! I show my husband some of the things (he's a graphic designer) and we have a great time laughing at some of the designs. Other times it's absolutely great. The latest issue (Aug. 2004) is one of the best and the theme is Exotic Homes Around The World, and they are all fantastic. Of course I wish I could afford a lovely home such one of these in the magazine (maybe one day?) but in the meantime I can look at these homes and dream and also get great design ideas. This magazine is wonderful and relaxing to look at and read.
Love it and Hate it May 24, 2002 10 out of 17 found this review helpful
Architectural Digest varies so much. Often the interiors are quite slick, lacking sophistication and elegance. For example, Sally Sirkin Lewis' homes appear and, they like many others in the journal, lack the timelessness that high quality interiors posses. I do enjoy the sources despite the fact that many of the featured homes scream Noveau.
A Wonderful Escape and Idea Generator November 1, 2001 J. R Selfe (Torrance, CA) 8 out of 12 found this review helpful
This magazine has been an inspiration for decorating ideas for me. No, I can't afford a million dollars for a remodel. What I get most out of this publication is not only ideas on decorating but also different perspectives, the wonderful education I'm getting on antiques, personal views (you will be missing a lot if you don't read the visiting editorial pieces) and until recently WEB topics. This magazine is NOT just for looking at the "pretty pictures". It deserves to be read in a much fuller context.
