A literate and beautifully photographed magazine January 1, 2003 Reginald D. Garrard (Camilla, GA USA) 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
Every issue of "Smithsonian" is as varied as the multitude of items found in the much-heralded institution. Having visited the respective museums in the Smithsonian complex on the mall in DC, I have come to respect the magazine as providing its readers with such diverse articles within its pages. The reader can find historical essays and reports, science developments, the arts, and a bevy of pieces encompassing the whole of existence on this planet. One of the most highly entertaining magazines of its type, it is not just an intellectual pursuit. It is geared for all interests.
frustrating experience April 21, 2004 17 out of 80 found this review helpful
I recently subscribed to the magazine and received my first issue in two months. I didn't like the magazine at all and it didn't seem to offer anything interesting or useful to me or my family. So I decided to cancel it. It was handled all by the phone. I thought it was done. Little did I know that it was just the beginning of a long, frustrating, and upsetting journey. After over a month since I cancelled the magazine I still hadn't received the refund. So I had to call them. With a lot of difficulty I was able to get in touch with a customer service person. She told me that it was left there without anyone taking care of it. So she promised me that she would get it straightened up and I could expect to see the credit on my credit account account within five days. A week passed yet no credit back. Then I had to call them again. This time it took me extremely long time to even get to talk to the person in charge. I was told vaguely that it would take one to two billing statements to see the refund. I am not sure how long it will take for me to get the refund or whether I can eventually. My suggestion is, based on my experience, make sure you do like a magazine before subscribing to it; otherwise you are inviting trouble and it will cost you both time and money.

Every month this mag has fascinating articles. History, current events, Politics, Enviromentalism, Science, Technology, Art, & daily living in the USA are all covered here. The topics are diverse, well written, & the photography can sometimes rival National Geographic. Smithsonian's articles encompasse several areas covered in magazines as various as "The Atlantic Monthly, Economist, Discovery, US News & World Report, & Archaeology. From prehistory to the newest innovations you will find it here.

This magazine is beautifully done. The subject matter is varied and is always interestingly written. You don't need to be a historian to find this magazine captivating. The photographs are beautiful, the writing is first rate and the subjects are fascinating.
Great Reading November 26, 2002 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
Smithsonian is a fantastic magazine. The articles are always interesting and well written. Even on a topic that I think I am not interested in, I find if I start reading, I will be completly enthralled by the end of the article. It is the perfect thing to take on the plane or on vacation, and you'll learn about topics from art, architecture, history, to endagered species, wildlife habitats and popular culture, plus everthing in between. The perfect gift.
