great magazine but pay attention to sizing April 14, 2005 P. Collins (Dallas, Texas USA) 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
I love the fashions with a European flare, but you must be able to adjust patterns as well as copy them! I'm 5'10 and the misses are sized for 5'7 and the plus sizes only go up to 5'3. This poses a bit of a challenge since I'm size 18 currently and cannot always add 7 inches to the height of a garment in the appropriate areas.
Grew up with Burda patterns November 30, 2005 M. Zarco (Grapevine, Texas) 19 out of 21 found this review helpful
I have been surrounded by Burda patterns all my life. My mom was a very skilled tailor and dressmaker (and even though she could do any kind of pattern from scratch) she was, how can I say this.... addicted to Burda. Apart from her business, both my sister and me must have worn almost all of those cute models throughout the years! My dolls were also tailored by Burda! Mom retired many years ago as her sight deteriorated but she still keeps all her Burda magazines. Some of them as old as early 70's when it was not even translated (at least not to Spanish). Despite having a passion for textiles I ended up in the IT business but even today I cannot walk by a Burda magazine without having a lengthy good look. Years after I left home I sneaked a few issues from mom's Burda collection, these are some summer issues that have wonderful patterns that withstand time. I keep these treasured issues safely in my home office. Now-a-days I occasionally find time for sewing as a hobby or when I am really stressed out. I find it my best therapy, I grab a cup of good Costa Rican coffee and sit back with one of my favorite issues. This year I am planning on getting the subscription as a Christmas present for myself and thereafter continue with a family tradition. I cannot wait to get my first very own Burda! If you are into sewing professionally or as an amateur, I strongly recommend that you also try it out.
Excellent sewing magazine February 3, 2004 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
This is an excellent magazine with sewing patterns provided for every model in it. Every issue contains several patterns for blouses, skirts, jackets, pants, dresses and children's clothing, in 4-5 sizes. The contents of the 12 issues follow the seasons, so the models are very versatile. There are also very helpful detailed step-by step explanations on how to sew. The level of difficulty varies, making sure that there are always a few simple patterns for those that are just beginning to learn. One may also look for Burda's special magazines such as "Blouses, Skirts, Trousers", "Burda Kids' Fashions", "Burda Plus" and "Burda Petite Fashions".
Burda's the Best November 9, 2005 DTT 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I highly recommend Burda magazines. The styles are fashionable and the fit is outstanding. I've found fashion elements in Burda patterns two seasons before they appear in US fashion magazines. I'm a beginner sewer, so getting over the pattern tracing and seam allowance addition were a bit of a challenge, but once I did, I found the patterns to be great.
From a beginner... January 8, 2007 Teresa L. Hamilton (Indianapolis, IN USA) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This magazine is an outrageously good value. There have been at least a handful of clothing items that I adore in each and every issue. The pieces are what I would call high-fashion, but most pieces are classic enough that I wouldn't call them a fad. There are also a good number of easier patterns included for beginners like me. I would recommend, however, that a beginner work in a classroom or with an experienced sewer first. I first tried to make one of the Burda patterns on my own and failed pretty badly because I didn't understand the instructions, which are much lighter in this magazine than those found on a regular pattern envelope. I later took a sewing class at my local art center and with the assistance of the instructor, was able to successfully create a level 2 pattern from the magazine (the patterns are in levels 1 through 4, 1 being easiest). I highly recommend this magazine to anyone who is looking to make high-fashion, unique clothing pieces at home.
