4 out of 5 stars This was a good magazine   January 19, 2004

I have been subscribing to American Girl since I was eight years old. I'm twelve now, but I still think it's a great magazine. Parents will find it appropriate for girls ages 8-13 because it really doesn't focus on fashion, beauty, and boys, although I, along with other girls, think it would be fine if they did an article like that once in a while. American Girl is a magazine that helps girls gain more self-confidence and self-esteem.

Each issue features party ideas, a page called "Heart to Heart" where girls speak out on different topics such as most embarrasing moments or favorite present, an advice column called "Help!" that features advice to letters sent in by girls, information about what girls are doing to help the earth and their community, seasonal features, and much more.

American Girl features many contests for drawing, story-writing, and other topics. The magazine is vivid and colorful, and has fun things to do when you're bored, like fun foods and drinks to make, stories to read, games and puzzles, and craft projects.

All in all, I would recommend this magazine to any girl who isn't old enough for teen magazines, or any girl who just wants a fun, appropriate, light magazine to read. American Girl is a good magazine!

5 out of 5 stars My 10 year old loves this magazine!   September 10, 2003

As a parent of a pre-teen, I've found no other magazine that addresses the age between Sesame Street and Young Miss. This magazine does it very nicely. It gives my daughter lots of ideas for the holidays year around and she reads it cover to cover at least twice during the month. It's a favorite around our household!

Even though I am 14, I still think American Girl is a wonderful magazine. This magazine has absolutley NO ads. However they do include little tear outs to renew or subscribe.
In this magazine, there is a spot for about 4 or 5 letters from readers. They also teach you a new word, called the "buzzword" and they hide it somewhere in the issue and you find it. AG includes true stories, awesome ideas, polls, Art Gallery, quizzes, crafts and more.
Also, in each issue, there is "Heart to Heart." Girls can express themselves. The topics range from most embarassing moments to the nicest thing a friend has ever done for them. In the back, "HELP!" is when girls send in questions, like about growing up, frendship problems, and more and AG answers them.
The average issue has about 48 pages. I would recommend this for girls ages 8-12 most, but girls of any age would enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars From a purely academic standpoint...well maybe not "purely"   April 1, 2007

I'm a magazine major in college, and I'm studying AG this semester. I actually wanted to thank you all for your great comments on Amazon- beleive it or not, they're really helpful for my research paper!
I was a huge fan of AG as a young girl, and honstly, even at 18 I'm finding that more than just researching the magazine, I'm really enjoying reading it. This is, in my opinion, the only respectable magazine left for young girls. It will never ask you to grow up too quickly or to change who you are. It will never tell you there's a certain way to act around boys, or wear your hair, or paint your lips. It doesn't insult with dribble about scandals and celebrities. AG glorifies girls. It asks their input, and really cares about the feedback (yes, I found out from interviewing the founding editor that they actually file every piece of reader mail for future reference). I urge you to get this publication for your daughters. It is truly exceptional.

American Girl is the ultimate magazine for girls ages 8-14. This magazine does not focus on dating, clothes, and make-up, but it is an inspiring magazine for girls. The magazine has many neat features, like contests every month, Heart to Heart, a section where girls can speak out on specific topics, true stories about girls, crafts, games, puzzles, quizzes, an advice column, and much, much more. One great thing about this magazine is that it has no advertisements! American Girl is the best magazine, and I love reading it! Girls will love it!
