I purshased this magazine as part of a wedding present for a friend who lived on the east coast. A year later when I was recieving subscription renewal notices I asked that friend whether or not he had found it useful. He had never recieved a single issue. The complaint I filed was never acknowledged. I consider this very poor service.

2 out of 5 stars Great magazine, HORRID customer service!!!   August 23, 2006

Cook's Illustrated is the first cooking magazine that I'd found myself truly motivated to read cover-to-cover, even though they DO insert advertisements for their own products, which I suppose, to them, makes this an "ad-free" magazine, but I'm not surprised they've bent the rules with that claim. The one time I found it necessary to contact Cook's Illustrated about a customer service issue, I was simply floored by the treatment that I received... I'll simply leave it at that.

I personally don't intend on re-subscribing ("Fine Cooking", here I come!). You, however, may find that this is the cooking magazine for you. And, as far as what they do goes, Cook's Illustrated IS good at what they do - I'll give them that.

If you have not found this review to be helpful, I'm sorry if I haven't made the value in my warning apparent. Just know that there are those of us out there who HAVE had bad experiences, and are simply trying to prevent others from experiencing the same.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best cooking magazine available.   February 8, 2003

I've been a subscriber to COOK'S since its first issue in 1994. Other reviews have pointed out that the magazine is slim --especially so considering that it's a bimonthly -- and black-and-white (except for the covers). But in terms of value for the price, it beats the competition handily. Every square inch of the magazine is packed with USEFUL information. Each recipe is tested dozens of times with countless variations to find the *best* and most foolproof version. This painstaking testing process is well-detailed in the article preceding each recipe, which is helpful if you want to produce a result other than that which the refined recipe gives. Almost every issue contains at least one or two recipes that I end up adding to my permanent collection of favorites. I have followed their product evaluations and cookbook reviews accurate and reliable (as much so as, say, CONSUMER REPORTS). I'll take this quiet, no-nonsense publication over the glossy, advertising-heavy magazines that substitute quantity of recipes over quality and thoroughness.

3 out of 5 stars Needs to be in color   December 4, 2003

The recipes and information is great in Cook's Illustrated. The only really bad thing is that it's not in color. When they're comparing the a burnt bread to a well cooked bread it would be easier to see it if the photo was in color.

5 out of 5 stars This is for you only phizzadore!   April 14, 2004

For someone that gives no more than 2 stars to virtually all reviews I give no credance to your comments. I will only comment that you completely miss the whole point of what these people are trying to accomplish. Instead of complaining about repetitive recipes get the book "The Best Recipe" and refrain from writing pointless reviews.
