Fun, liberal magazine but obviously a strong New York focus January 13, 2006 Not my real name (San Francisco, CA) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
If you want to know about and read reviews about current New York city entertainment, the New Yorker gives a great overview. Includes about 6 to 8 well written current affairs articles, with a definite liberal slant. Great book reviews and essays -- often about books and authors that are not in the mainstream fiction and non-fiction booklists. Avant-garde short stories by both new and established authors. And, of course, the cartoons. Surprisingly, these are generally fairly benign with little political or current affairs focus.
The New Yorker Sets the Standard November 20, 2001 A.Trendl HungarianBookstore.com (Glen Ellyn, IL USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
(...)"The New Yorker" does set the standard. I can't agree with every idea, and not every standard they set is worth chasing. However, the sum of this magazine, helped founded by the great wit Dorothy Parker, is a solid thinking, literary, humorous magazine.I won't belabor my review analyzing "The New Yorker" to death, but give it a shot. Read it, and be a better rounded, better thinking person as a result. I fully recommend "The New Yorker." Anthony Trendl
Don't look any further for a fabulous magazine! January 13, 2002 A. Cole (Vancouver, BC) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
The New Yorker has a fabulous blend of different elements, all of which makes this magazine worthwhile- exceptional reviews, hillarious comics that are intelligently written (tip: look for Roz Chast's cartoons, she's great), articles that make you stop and think, then, for the avid New Yorker (or traveler to New York), it shows show listings and going ons throughout the city. The best part- there aren't huge, horrible ads constantly screaming in your face with colors that are too bright. Basically, if you're looking for a magazine that isnt about fasion, beauty and junk like that, this is your one stop, pure heaven magazine.
A strong source of information about the New York City life February 28, 2003 Anton B. kuzmanov (new york, ny) 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
Althought it could be pretentiouos and snobbish, the New Yorker is an institution as far as a source of information for the current cultural and artistic scene in the city. It provides more comprehensive information about current exhibits, museums, music venues, etc. than any other source I know. Almost every issue has interesting articles, and excellent cartoons!
Great Read Week after Week May 19, 2004 Hermenegildo Santisteban (Tampico, Tamaulipas Mexico) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The New Yorker is a great magazine for people of all ages. It provides short, insightful pieces, "great-sprawling stuff" (to quote Charlie Kaufman), political, fashion and arts pieces. The film review are not to be missed, as they are the most poignant out there.
