5 out of 5 stars Highlights Still a Highlight!   November 16, 2005

My 6-year-old, who is a fairly advanced reader for her age, loves Highlights...in fact, it's only been in the past 6 months or so that she has really started getting into the magazine. We've been subscribing to it for a year or so, but now that she can read, she can't wait to tear into it when it arrives.

5 out of 5 stars As Wonderful As Ever   October 30, 2005

I remember reading Highlights in school and in doctors' waiting rooms when I was a little girl. I believe it is as good today as it was then, and I am impressed that the quality has remained consistent throughout the years. Highlights today has the same kinds of puzzles, crafts, hidden pictures, games, and stories that I enjoyed as a child. The puzzles and games are challenging but not frustrating. And I can't stop smiling when reading the stories. This is great for all ages of kids at heart and, of course, for kids to have fun while learning.

4 out of 5 stars excellent resource   August 21, 2006

I enjoyed this magazine as a kid, but then, I also loved Electric Company. Looking at both now, they seem dated and tedious, but perhaps our children need something that moves at a slower pace than everything seems to do now. Neither of my children (5 & 7) enjoyed Highlights at first, but after getting a subscription from their grandmother, they have discovered the joy of curling up in a quiet corner and figuring out the puzzles and stories for themselves. It's a magazine with a style and format that encourages reflection and absorption, rather than a voracious grab and go version of reading, that I believe will give a child a better foundation. "To read without reflection is like eating without digesting" Edmund Burke

3 out of 5 stars unpleasant customer service   December 28, 2005

The first customer service person said the first issue was going to be sent on Dec. 1. We didn't receive it. The second person said it was sent to a wrong address, and he would sent it again. The third person said nothing was sent so far, and actually the Jan. issue is going to be the first issue we can receive. Not reliable customer service. I canceled the subscription.

1 out of 5 stars Abandon all hope, ye who enter here. Aka DOWN WITH HIGHLIGHTS!   June 5, 2006

Highlights is quite possibly the most completely unhelpful and unentertaining magazine i've ever read. It isn't funny, and it's often patronizing and tries too hard to include everybody. It isn't educational at all. If you want your child to grow and develop, don't get highlights. If you want your child to be an average, ordinary, everyday person who is content with reading insultingly easy little stories that are complete gas and bunk, go ahead. The inanity of this magazine would be amusing if it weren't so pathetic. Don't get this magazine! Your brain is a special thing-don't let it deteriorate completely. You have been warned.
