This album sends chills down my spine!! August 27, 1999 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Enigma is already an increadible band and this album just proves even further the diversity and uniqueness that only Enigma can deliver with such an intensity like no other. Their simply are no comparisons to this! Enigma's first album "MCMXC a.D." contained much Gregorian Chanting with a distinct medievel sound and erroticism, while their second album "The Cross of Changes" featured more tribal/eastern chants and influences. "Le Roi est mort, Vive le Roi" combines the elements of the first two yet at the same time sounds very different from both of them. It is deeply ambient and atmospheric yet is simply too intense and emotional for me to call it mood music. Not to mention Enigma's music is very, very sensual! I highly reccomend this cd along with the other two Enigma albums (the first one is my personnal favorite) and am eagerly awaiting Enigma's fourth album due out in the next few months.

Because I own all 4 and of them all I have to say that Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi! is the BEST(!!) of them all. Third of its kind gives me chills EVERY TIME I listen to it. How morphing through time goes from the "lahh..lahh..lahh..." seductive voices to third of its kind all the way to the drumbeats and scratching used in Beyond the Invisible, this CD is so seductive and so mystical. Second only in its mythical proportions to Sadness Pt. 1, I'd say if you don't own this CD "you are insane. It is love and not a game!" :) Sorry, those were lyrics I couldn't resist, they're in T.N.T. for the brain. Speaking of couldn't resist... "You were my side... I couldn't resist..." Heh, okay I'll stop now. Anyway, bottom line, fine, you have to be slightly deranged and totally unresponsive not to get this CD! You WON'T be disappointed!

I think of all the Enigma albums (excluding their greatest hits and remix collection), "Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi!" is my personal favorite album. The cd packaging alone is worthy of 4 stars. The transparency of the cd booklet and the pictures is not something I see nowadays. Musically, Enigma puts out the best new age/ambient music that there is. The music isn't ridiculously cheesy like Yanni or just plain cheesy like Enya (although I do enjoy her music a lot). I can hear the Enigma influences in a lot of Delerium's music, especially on their album "Semantic Spaces" as well as "Karma". The songs on "Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi!" is so haunting, it sends chills down my spine. And judging by the song titles, (I think) this album is based on existentialism. I think Michael Cretu's best work as a vocalist shines through on "Beyond the Invisible". Listening to the song and his vocals sends me off on a journey on another plane of reality. The haunting aspect of the song makes "Beyond the Invisible" my personal favorite song off the album. And what is an Enigma album without the use of traditional Gregorian chants on "Morphing Thru Time"? "Why" is another favorite Enigma song of mine that reminds me to ask myself 'why I am here?" and other questions regarding existentialism. Sandra Cretu, Michael's wife, couldn't have sound any better than she did on this album although her vocals were primarily used for background vocals. I find "Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi!" truly soothing and comforting to listen to. Listening to Enigma's music is another form of escapism from the ugliness of reality.
The King may be Dead, but Engima Lives on... February 27, 2003 The Golden Ostrich (Amateria) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I'm listening to this beautiful piece right now...the odd conglomeration of Morphing Thru Time is enough to calm even someone as frazzled and stressed as myself.Who would've thought that Enigma would continue to improve with time? I guess I should've given them more credit...I was a bit wary as I opened the CD, but I now know I shouldn't have been. I still have yet to find anyone who can top the breath-taking arrangements of Enigma...no one else can cross so many elements in music while still remaining in the realm of good taste. Combining opera with electric guitars is something that should turn out in disaster, but Enigma has an excellent hand when it comes to obscure recipes for beauty and relaxation.
Cretu please shut-up!! September 2, 2000 Matthew P. Carroll (Bordentown, New Jersey United States) 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
I have enjoyed this CD and all the relaxing moments it has, all the emotion and power it contains, as with every other Enigma CD (maybe excluding Cross Of Changes). I just wish Cretu would create the music and not sing on it. He sounds like a mix of Richard Marx and Micheal Bolton and just when I feel like I am lifting off the earth, I am horrifically thrown back into high school in 1990 when Creu starts. Minus his voice the music can really take you away at times, to a beautiful dreamy place...
