loose, off-key, wonderful acoustic jam session January 28, 1999 Eric C. 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
A couple of Brazil's finest singer/songwriters jamming to each other's songs, the absolute antithesis of the slick studio album. Listen to it in the right mood and it will teach you to dance and play guitar and believe that humanity is a very good thing. In the wrong mood, this classic recording might sound like off-key caterwauling punctuated by repetitive lyrics. In any case, the irrepressible and fluid rhythmic pulse of this session will not soon fade from your memory.
Wow, what a SURPRISE, Muy Beautiful! June 28, 2004 Gilbert Barnes (Newport Beach, CA USA) 3 out of 9 found this review helpful
Most of my adult life, I have been a fan of Rock and Blues; The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy and Robert Cray. So, surfing the web, I come across the music of Gilberto Gil, the King of Brazilian music. Strange, with my music taste, how contrariwise I fall in love with this eclectic music collage of Brazilian jazz, retro acoustic rock and Reggae. I am a convert; I love how Gilberto Gil?s integrates so many musical themes into a marvelous acoustic sensation, akin to an auditory orgasm. Yes, I almost said it, this is better than sex or certainly makes sex even better, really. What a great surprise. Gil has impeccable timing. The recording fidelity is as good as it gets. This is a CD you should listen to a few times. The layers and textures are subtle and are revealed only when you are sitting down, relaxed. As I researched Gil, he's been around playing since the mid 50's and he won the best album for the Latin Grammy?s. You will not be disappointed. This CD is not a 5, it's a 5.5. And, I love this music, but, what a great name, Gilberto Gil, I am jealous; I should be so lucky, hmmn.
A loose and soulful jam session January 11, 2005 K. Spindler (Bangkok, Thailand) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
The high ratings this album received is fully deserved. However, I would like to warn those interested that this album was pretty much a jam session recorded in one night by two people (and other musicians in the session) who had never previously played together. And it sounds like it. The songs are played loose, where Gil and Ben settle into a groove and then improvise the rest. There's nothing complicated here- after a decade listening to this album, I even feel some grooves are simply repetitive, and even, dare I say it, annoying- just laid-back brazilian rhythms propelled by the uncut soul that is their voices. That it works superbly is a testament to the supreme confidence each artist has in their musical ability.
