5 out of 5 stars A Living Legend   May 14, 2008
T. S. Lewis (Los Angeles, CA United States)

"Home Before Dark" is playing while I type this review! I'm 33 years old and have truly become a Neil Diamond fan within the last 10 years. Brought up mainly with the love of Elvis... Neil Diamond managed to skip my childhood memories. My parents always liked him but not as much as their Memphis "King". I do not want to compare the two but would like to just say one thing and that's Neil Diamond wrote all of his own music.

My favorite Neil songs were mostly from the late 60's through the mid 70's. He still managed to make great music though till roughly the mid 80's. He has so much soul in his voice with lyrics that are both poetic and haunting. He is simply a man who has been around a good long while and has experienced so much of life.

When I bought "12 Songs" I realized that he still had it. He managed to continue with his "sound" but in a more quiet and subtle way. I must admit when I bought "Home Before Dark" I was anxious to know if this follow up album would compare. All I can say is that Neil's new CD is absolutely amazing! It is brilliant in every way imaginable. He sounds so comfortable behind the microphone... like he's talking to an old friend. To me it has a similar sound to his early work from the 70's. This man is almost 70 years old and is by far putting out the most groundbreaking material I've heard in a long time. It's so hard to pick a song that stands out as they ALL stand out. Every song on this CD is magic. Neil Diamond is a living legend and needs to be respected and forever immortalized in music history.

2 out of 5 stars Great voice wasted on vapid lyrics   May 28, 2008

I've listened to this once, and that's probably the only time I'll ever listen to it. From a songwriter of Neil Diamond's caliber the lyrics sound like they were written by a high school freshman in his first creative writing class.
Example:
All I want
Is to do it once more
Let me get through that door
Cause I still do believe that I can
Want that one more bite of the apple
And just a chance to taste it once again
Been around the world a time or two
Everywhere I've been I thought of me and you
I was hoping you'd remember how it used to be
And maybe that you'd still remember me
And that apple just as sweet as it could be
Reach right up and pick one of that apple tree

Just vague "you" and "me." Who's singing here about apples, Adam to Eve? "Remember how it used to be." What is "it?" The Garden of Eden before The Fall? His recording career? A relationship between two people? I want back through "that door?" First mention of a door comes at the end of the song. What's that about?

Neil's voice has never sounded better, but it's frustrating that it's wasted on such inane lyrics.

Things are gonna get serious.
What a waste of a chance for the two of us.
What can I do?
Is it so mysterious?
I would be much less than I am
if I couldn't have you.

Neil, you say you would be "less than I am," but you never say exactly what that is. What is it that this other person did that made you what you are? S/he was your "friend" and "by your side," but why, specifically--in the set of circumstances that precipitated this song--did you need a friend by your side? Rick Rubin also produced Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt," and he should've made Neil listen to it every day, forcing him to tighten up his songwriting.

Neil seems to be drawing from a well-used group of metaphors and similes: "I was an empty vessel, you filled me up inside." Plato was using "empty vessel" as a metaphor way back then.

Some of my first albums growing up were Neil Diamond albums. I'd listen to "Hot August Night" through headphones, over and over. Compared to that album, this just seems like phoning it in.

Five stars for Neil's voice, zero stars for the album averages two stars, rounding down, just because I can.

5 out of 5 stars Diamond at his best!   May 29, 2008

There are few if any current day pop musicians who can match the musical ability of Neil Diamond. This CD is super!!! Melodies that have the unique blends and arrangements we would expect from ND, with lyrics that have meaning, yet are clever. You'll find these songs still playing in your head for days after you hear them. This CD is an absolute MUST BUY for us Baby Boomers who grew up with Neil Diamond, but also anyone younger who wants to listen to truly GOOD music!!

If he only hadn't recorded that song with Natalie Maines, I would have bought the album. Just can't bring myself to do it...

5 out of 5 stars "Home Before Dark" As We Continue The Path Of "Glory Road"   May 9, 2008
NickiCarm (Monticello, NY USA)
For a long-time fan of Neil Diamond, "Home Before Dark" is just one more gem in his catalogue, gifted to his listeners and followers over the course of forty-plus years. "If I Don't See You Again", for me, would justify the purchase of the album! And then, there's more and more and more! Even the Dylan and Simon covers are fun and acknowledge two more amazing "Boomer contributions" to the history of music. Wow! We are a lucky generation.

For a new fan of Neil Diamond - i.e., you "Idol" watchers! - just purchase "Home Before Dark" and listen backwards, as you discover the catalogue of an artist who has the ability to touch our souls. In my opinion, Neil Diamond addresses the absolute essence of our human emotions; and, I am so thrilled and grateful to just...

"Feel it one more time."
