better than expected March 11, 2008 James (A-Town PA) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
for those of us that are doors fans that feel the studio albums are the best the doors have to offer this albums comes as a surprize in its quality in both sound and showmanship. jim gives some top quality live performances of studio classics, but the best of this album is jims ability to play songs live that are not in their studio releases. when the musics over and someday soon are great examples of quality showmanship that give the band a uniqueness in their live performances to always come up with something new and unexpected.higly recommended along with live in detroit and philly.

Just like the detriot cd or boston cd the doors do another great live cd. I have said this again and again im so glad they are putting out the full live albums.I wish they would stop puting out sample live cds there just not as good as the real deal.there no remixes or anything its the three guys and jim you can hear the mistaxes and everthing. the 20+ min version of when the musics over is the higlight of this album you wouldnt get that on a sample live cd ,so dont waste youre money on things like in concert or bright midnight get the Pittsburgh cd and you will be happy.
Essential Doors June 1, 2008 Scott Rivers (Los Angeles, CA USA) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
After slurring the blues on the three-disc "Live in Boston," Jim Morrison comes alive for this remarkable Doors concert. Recorded on May 2, 1970, "Live in Pittsburgh" may be the group's finest live album to date - even better than the Detroit and Philadelphia releases. For 79 minutes, the Doors deliver the goods with excellent versions of "Back Door Man," "Roadhouse Blues," "Mystery Train" and "Light My Fire." The 22-minute "When the Music's Over" is simply astonishing. Throw in a rare performance of "Someday Soon" and you have a definite keeper.
Perhaps the best starting point for BMA? March 28, 2008 lawgiver4feh 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Perhaps the best starting point for The Doors' Bright Midnight Archives releases? This is a fairly strong entry and it's very affordable compared to the rest of the catalog and for this reason it might be a great starting point. Back Door Man, Love Hides and Five to One are no strangers to the set list with BMA releases and these are good renditions. Moving along to Roadhouse Blues, Morrison reprises his "scat" vocal and it works very well. Moving on to the Mystery Train, Away in India and Crossroads Blues jam; Ray plays with an energy on these that is not entirely unheard before, but just a little bit more "on." Or perhaps it's just he's louder in the mix. Ray's keyboards are upfront on this release; his bass runs are at equal volume with his other keyboard parts and this is unique. We are talking subtleties here, you can here the whole band, but you can really hear Ray leading the band on this one. Universal Mind and Someday Soon are ok songs (Someday Soon being particular to this release) and I'll leave it at that. Now we get to the interesting part of the release. When the Music's Over features some guttural shouts, screams and feedback loops that lead to the very awesome Soft Parade Vamp. This is the "... callin on the dogs ... you gotta meet me ... at the crossroads ..." part of the song which is distinctly different from the recorded version. It rocks and makes one wish there were more live renditions of The Soft Parade out there to hear. Light My Fire, well the first 1:44 of the song is from Live in Philadelphia patched on to the Pittsburgh version. You can see Bruce Botnick's liner notes for the explanation, it's barely noticeable. Another excellent entry for the Bright Midnight Archives, check it out if you are a die hard Doors' fan.
