2 out of 5 stars missing Shannon   September 22, 2008

The lyrics on this album wallow in generality and cliche: they spoil the music. I'm not sure what part Travis Warren played in composing the songs (since they are all "written by Blind Melon as One"), but as far as I can tell, the boys are missing Shannon Hoon. Warren's voice isn't bad, but it just points up how extraordinary Mr. Hoon was. I understand why Melon went with a guy who could ape Hoon; after all, the fans will expect to hear all the old, great songs when they tour. Unfortunately, the most this album has done for me is remind me that Blind Melon (in their original line-up) is one of my favorite bands. After a couple listens to "For my Friends," I dug out the Shannon Hoon albums and had myself a good old time. The raw energy and specificity of Hoon's language, combined with the songwriting on those first three albums, outshines anything on this latest album. Stick with the Hoon stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Blind Melon is back!   April 22, 2008
William L. Fulks (Gulfport, MS United States)
With a blessing from former singer Shannon Hoon's own mother, Blind Melon is back in name and sound. With a new singer, Travis Warren, they deliver 13 new tracks that will please both old and new fans alike. This album is one hit after the other, and I highly recommend it to anyone who (like me) is tired of everything on the radio that sounds the same. The band is also touring all over the United States, so get the CD and go see a show!

1 out of 5 stars Pathetic   May 4, 2008

Bad, real bad. I respect the fact that the surviving members of Blind Melon wanted to make music together again but they should have least hired a new singer that sounded nothing like Shannon. I would have had way more respect for the project. Go buy/listen to the real deal ala the Blind Melon debut or Soup.

3 out of 5 stars Good effort but...   May 5, 2008

I loved Blind Melon in the 90's and have and love all their albums. Having said that what I didn't like about this album is the lack of energy that this album had. Old Melon seemed reckless and that gave it extra energy, this seems too controlled in comparison. Anyway, it seems like a good album but it was not what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Head not the nay-sayers   May 5, 2008
C. Taylor (NW Arkansas)
Ignore the negative comments. The current line-up is not trying to cash in on anything or anyone. They are simply continuing the message. It's been 12 years and the loss of of a great talent, but they have gained a new talent who was raised on Shannon's beauty. It's no surprise that people learn from and in some ways mimic their mentors. That is what makes this reunion work so well. Travis can sing the old tunes great and the new tunes have the same feel good vibe that Blind Melon has always given off. If you see them live in their current state it's a truly magical experience and you could swear Shannon's soul is bouncing all around the venue. That is what it's about, not money. The embarrassment is that there are Blind Melon fans who can be so close minded they are unable to see the good in this. You don't have to like it, but don't talk so harshly about it just because you have the misfortune of not getting it. Simply say you don't feel the magic anymore. Just because you heart has grown up doesn't mean Blind Melon has done anything to tarnish their credibility or Shannon's honor.
