3 out of 5 stars A depature from the expected   July 17, 2008

I just finished listening to this for the first time and I was shocked at the departure from the funky, upbeat tunes that I am used to hearing from O.A.R. The album sounds like the music was written using a formula rather than instinct. Mark seems to me missing his slightly naughty, tongue in cheek, humor in this album. Perhaps they are growing up; perhaps they are trying to rediscover themselves after 10 years of playing.

2 out of 5 stars Just not the same   July 17, 2008

I have been a big fan of these guys for over 10 years and I have to admit, the last cd "stories of a stranger" was the beginning of a downward slope for these guys. I still love that cd, but it really is not the same. Love and Memories is without a doubt the worst song these guys have ever written, but it was the fan favorite of all the poser fans.

Sure Marc still shows his great vocals, but the sound in the songs just does not go along with what these guys are all about. Richard has a whole lot more talent that is not expressed in this CD, Benj is one of the best bassists out there, and he doesnt have any heavy basslines like he did back in the day. Chris is great as well, always keeps some of the best beats, and Jerry is always a fan favorite, but I dont think they need to include the horn in every song. Their best cds were the ones where the sax came in sparingly.

Too much glamor and pop in their new cds. Too much production and acheivement for perfection. Keyboards are rarely necessary for these guys. I just want an oldschool type cd from these guys again where they record everything all at once like they did for "Souls Aflame" and "the Wanderer"

All Sides is the perfect mix of what O.A.R has to offer. But, nothing compares to seeing them live. These guys have the potential to be the biggest thing since DMB. No band has the energy or talent like O.A.R. Their music is best heard when driving, boating, chillin' on the beach or just relaxing with your buddies. Always brings up the mood in any atmosphere!

4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it   July 22, 2008

Let me preface this review with saying this is my first O.A.R. album to listen to. I found them under New Releases on my Zune subscription. Anyway, as an adult in his late 20's I find this music particularly enjoyable. Strong vocals, without overdriving instrumentals makes it a particularly great listen while working (I'm a software engineer). The singer on some songs has a definite James Blunt sound to his voice, and I feel he hits the highs very fluidly, moreso than James Blunt, and their music has more rock to it.

I guess some people might say they "sold out" or what have you, but on the whole, I feel this album deserves at least a listen or three to really enjoy its musical nuances.

2 out of 5 stars Been listening since the 90's......   September 2, 2008

......and this band has totally changed....for the worse, imo.

i started listening to O.A.R. in college....probably about 10 years ago now. i've been to numerous concerts...i own every cd they have ever put out....they've been my favorite band for about 8-9 years.

what they have evolved into just isn't for me......their music has become way over the top....too poppy....too soft....barely sounds like the O.A.R. that I'm familar with. It's been a gradual decline imo....last couple albums have been less and less impressive....and they just dove off of the cliff with this one. I hate to say it, but it seems like they are more concerned with putting out radio-friendly crap that teenie boppers will run out and download. Honestly, I would call this album bubble gum.....

And for all of those people who say that O.A.R. is merely showing their versatility and showing different sides - that's crap. It's obvious that their sound has completely changed...completely....and if you don't recognize that, you haven't been listening to them for very long.

If you want a true taste of O.A.R. - you need to go buy their live album - Any Time Now. GREAT ALBUM. I'll keep listening to O.A.R., but they're no longer my favorite.....I doubt I'll be bothering with any more concerts....time to move on.
