An Excellent Surprise October 4, 2006 D. G Stone (Arlington Heights, IL) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is quiet the surprise of an album; it is excellent and totally released under the radar. In a year of huge disapointments across the board (muse and underoath, I am looking at you) this album is a shining example of how great of music artists can produce if they take their time coming into the mainstream and constantly strive to improve. Five stars for this album, definately one of the best five albums I have hear this year.
Skillet's best yet...? October 19, 2006 Cory D. Miller (Honolulu, HI) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Comatose, the latest album from Skillet, is described by the band as a different sound than previous works from this foursome--and Comatose doesn't disappoint. Having purchased several Skillet works before (back to "Hey You, I Like Your Soul") this is perhaps my favorite Skillet album yet. Track to track brings you in with much more harmony and musical diversity than was present in "Alien Youth" or "Collide." While every track on comatose is catchy and has great tonal qualities, it's not an album that will immediately get you in the mood for a "mosh pit" like Collide. Skillet's latest, though, is a gem.
Finally, a Christian album worthy of secular attention! November 7, 2006 Timothy Schmoyer (Dallas, TX) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
ORIGINALLY POSTED AT: [...] I've followed Skillet's music ever since they appeared on the Christian music scene, but I was never a huge fan until their latest album, Comatose, came out last month. This is one album that will definitely earn the status of "repeat-all" mode in my car. My original attraction was the combination of an orchestra and driving guitars with solid rhythm on almost every song, kinda reminding me of something like "Carol of the Bells" by "Trans Siberian Orchestra" or a heavy version of the Halo soundtrack. But after being hooked on the melodic rock orchestra, the lyrics started to sink in: Oh how I adore you Oh how I thirst for you Oh how I need you - Comatose, by Skillet Despite the lies that you're making Your love is mine for the taking My love is just waiting To turn your tears to roses I will be the one that's gonna hold you I will be the one that you run to My love is a burning, consuming fire - Whispers in the Dark, by Skillet May I especially recommend Rebirthing, The Last Night, Yours To Hold, Falling Inside The Black, and Whispers In The Dark. Fans of Nickelback and Hinder will appreciate the refined talent Skillet puts forth in this album. Comatose is probably one Christian album that is actually worthy of mainstream attention. I'd love to see it earn the respect of secular critics.
Quality Hard Rock November 25, 2006 S. Peek (Rocky Mountains, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Comatose is a collection of lyrically clean rock. The sound ranges from hard rock to pop sounding, but most of it leans toward the harder end of the spectrum. There are a couple of songs that are rather Christian oriented, but in most of them that part is pretty subtle. Some of the songs that are dealing with spiritual themes sound like they could be dealing with love relationships between people unless one follows the lyrics closely. One song that is very relevant to relationship issues that many face is 'The Older I Get' in which songwriter/lead singer John Cooper sings about the healing of his relationship with his estranged father. 'Better Than Drugs' is a great song with very good lyrics. Another top notch song is 'Rebirthing'. It is power rock at its best. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who enjoys hard rock including any parent who is looking for a CD with a positive message for a teen who enjoys hard rock.
Heavyweight Contender, Skillet is wide awake November 30, 2006 Sir Adam of Scots ((please remember to vote!!)) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
For the past few months I have been following the progress of this album on the bands web site, through behind the scenes video and blogs. All of this time, since their last album which I named best of 04 (there was a re-release in a special edition which was even better, in 05) I have been wringing my hands in anticipation. The Problem with that is, ofcourse, the mental buildup can often set the bar so high that its incapable of being reached. This time they vaulted... the bar was reached. Its definitely going to be at the forefront of this years contention for best album in my own little world. Whats great about it is the constructed mix of Rock, Piano, and raw emotion. No, this is rock, not emo... but I could stop right here and in about three minutes write about three pages on the definition of emo and how it isn't just a genre, because emo transitions into every genre... The rabbit is dead. Skillet really has pulled it off. I think that, though they are showing a new peak in this album, there is still plenty of room to expand on these new touches that they are adding: His wife's vocals, Symphony, the duel pedal that makes me drool for more... not to say that they fall short by any means on this album. As far as my ever expanding opinion can muster, this album is practically flawless. Trax 1, 5 and 10 are the best - Rock on. S~A~O~S
