Timeless, Honest, and Passionate September 12, 2006 J. Randall (Atlanta, GA USA) 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
I'll keep this short, here's what you won't and will find when listening to Continuum: Won't Find: - Songs written for the soul purpose of radio playability (such as in Heavier Things which he was assuredly rushed into recording to capitalize on his newly founded popularity) - Watered down instrumental parts by musicians hired to record and go home. - An uninspired regurgitation of past albums (playing it safe for short) Will Find: - A soulful, honest, and passionate album that was made for lovers of music. In short, a timeless album that listeners will be able to enjoy their whole lives. Final Thought: So much of the music we hear today is written in a kind of formula. Supposedly this formula ensures what we call "hits" which in turn ensures money made for the artist and the record label. In my humble opinion, this idea of formula has been the main cause for the degeneration of pop music. It has become music written to sell records not music written for the love of music. What we are left with is countless albums that enjoyable for about as long as it takes for the next album of the same kind to be released. This album is different. This album was written because the individuals involved love music and want listeners to love it with them.
Absolutely Fantastic September 15, 2006 April Hoffmann (Santa Barbara, CA USA) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I've been a John Mayer fan since before he was famous, and this album is incredible. Lyrically and musically - it will sweep you away. I personally think it's much better than his second album, and on par (if not better) than his first. Most albums you have a few songs you love, and a few songs you skip; on this album you'll hang on every song, every word, every beautiful melody. Buy two - you'll want to give it to a friend, trust me!
Stars But Ultimately May be a 5 Star Album Years To Come September 16, 2006 Stephen B. Wright (asper,AL) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have been a fan for John Mayer for several years now. I first heard of John on a radio program called Reg's Coffehouse on WRAX in Birmingham, AL they played John's music long before Room For Squares came out and I believe in the liner notes of Room For Squares there is a mention of the station manager/ programmer who gave him so much attention. Although, a fan of John I have never thought he had done a great album from start to finish. Continuum, though, has definitely made me a believer in John again he has definitely stepped up and made a great album. This album shows one thing and that is that he has matured and grown a lot musically in the past couple of years. There is not a weak song on here from start to finish. Standouts on the album really is all of the songs on the album. I have only one problem with the album and that is the cover of Jimi Hendrix's Bold As Love. John does a great job with the song and I do enjoy the song but the problem is the song to me sticks out like a sore thumb because all of the songs on the album fit really well together until you get to this song and it disrupts the mood of the album. The album would have been much better to have left that song of the album and put it out as a B-side or as a single by itself but not on the album. Okay that out of the way I do have some personal favorites off of the album and they are: 1. Slow Dancing In A Burning Room 2. Dreaming With A Broken Heart 3. In Repair 4. Stop This Train 5. The Heart Of Life But as I said this album does not have a bad song on it including the song Bold As Love. If your a fan of John buy this album steal it if you must because this is John's finest hour in his career so far. If you want to hear a really soulful and melodic album this is a must buy for those as well. Waiting On The World To Change sounds like it could have been written in the '60's.
Continuum...Impeccably Named September 21, 2006 A. Fontaine 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
I often marvel at how John Mayer's musical career is really shaping up to be the inverse of Eric Clapton's. Clapton arose as a fiery, distorted young guitar god before gravitating to 1990's Unplugged ascendancy and assured, moving pop ballads like "Tears In Heaven" and "Change The World". Mayer, by contrast, broke through with the laid-back Room For Squares, sporting acoustic guitars and heart-on-sleeve pillowtalk like "Your Body Is A Wonderland". Only recently has he begun to show off his considerable lead guitar chops, with jammy appearances alongside legends like Buddy Guy and Herbie Hancock, not to mention the Cream-channeling Try! featuring Mayer in a power trio setting. To be sure, Mayer's never made a secret of his devotion to the Strat-slinging pantheon of Hendrix, Vaughan, and Clapton. A limited-release bonus disc accompanying his debut featured covers of songs by the first two icons. And Clapton is invoked in the liner notes of Mayer's latest: "(he) knows I steal from him and he's still cool with it." Continuum, then, finds John Mayer more fully indulging his love of the blues. Consequently, the material moves even further away from the acoustic folk-driven pop songs that made him famous. This album unveils Mayer as a consummate musician, and with him a more dynamic, meatier sound. The good news? His tunes are all the better for it. Despite the sonic update, Mayer's pop-sensible songwriting is thankfully intact, particularly in dazzling tracks like the dramatic "In Repair" and falsetto-flavored "Vultures". Continuum also features a reverential take on "Bold As Love" that'll invariably horrify Hendrix purists. Who cares? It's still damn good. He's also gotten deeper, kids. Mature lyrics take on relevant issues-of-the-day, dispensing with the quippier, relationship-centric sentiments of previous albums--in other words, it's less "Daughters" and more "What's Goin' On". Tracks like lead single "Waiting On The World To Change" and "Belief" address global/socio-political topics without getting too heavy-handed. All in all, Continuum reveals an artist who continues to improve in all the important aspects of his craft while remaining exciting to listen to. As such, it's highly recommended.
The "Cool" Factor---Continuum is his Best Work September 23, 2006 Mike (Boston, MA) 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
John was explaining to his audience a few years ago about what he feels "cool" really is---"The sense that what you're seeing or hearing is what everything should be like, or really, cool is what we all want to be but we know we'll just f*** it up and fail at it. So, what do we do? We copy. We get as close as we can to being cool without going past 'go' and getting our $200 and selling out. I admit it...I copy off everything I think is cool and meld and mold and shape it together into my music. That's what I did when I was growing up, that's what I doing now and that's what I hope to keep doing in the future." Continuum is that future. For people that say John is ripping off or copying other artists, you know what: it's true. Does it make this record any worse? Nope. It's the next step of what John started when he was in high school with that Stevie Ray Vaughn cassette tape from his neighbor that he never returned. Face it: the only original sound came from Adam & Eve. Artists build off of other artists because (to quote Simon & Garfunkel) even "silence has sound" and you can't rip off what was already there, you can only build on it. Buy this record and experience John's musical sound. You won't regret it.
