The Biggest Surprise of the Year September 25, 2006 .......... (USA) 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is my first John Mayer CD. I've read a lot of good reviews on the internet about this album so I decided to take the plunge. And this CD was certainly a good buy. He's come along way from his earlier material. Just judging from what I've heard on MTV and the sort, it seems like "Continuum" is a big improvement. I think he's on the right track. This album might be the biggest surprise of the year. I really didn't expect this sort of album coming from him. John Mayer really has a terrific voice. It really didn't grab my attention before, but I think this material brings out the best qualities in it. "Continuum" is impressive. He's got real talent. The most surprising track for me is "Belief" because I never thought his voice could slide across a slick bass groove like that. Lyrically, it's a bold move to attach something with such gravitas to more of an up-tempo track. But he makes it work flawlessly. He's definitely someone to watch in the future. His progression as a recording artist should be interesting. "Continuum" suggests that John Mayer is brimming with potential. I look forward to hearing more from him. Favorites: I Don't Trust Myself (With Loving You), Belief, Gravity, The Heart of Life, Vultures, Slow Dancing in a Burning Room, Dreaming With A broken Heart, I'm Gonna Find Another You.
One of the Best September 25, 2006 J. Tully (Ohio) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
For the past week now, John Mayer's new cd "Continuum" has made about 5 rotations a day in more than one of my cd players, and for good reason. As an already momumental fan of John's, I have to say that I was expecting a lot and knew there would be no disappointment. I was more than correct. This soulful, and insightful, laid back pop-blues esque album comes at a perfect time. Following his latest project "Try" with the Trio, this cd only builds on the incredible career he has been putting together for the last 7 or so years. The Trio's guitar heavy blues jams have been the bridge between John's past solo works and his newest adventure. Those who do not support this entising new sound should be disreagrded for lack of any sort of musical taste. There is truth and emotion behind every touch of the forward button. Lyrically, I haven't heard anybody worthy of comparison these days. In a pop world filled with songs about historical places (namely "bridges") and nursery rhyme beats over droning untalented ramble, I couldn't have been any more excited for this day to come. John Mayer is an amazing musician, who has already achieved what most do in a lifetime, and all after only 15 years from the first day he layed hands on a 6-string. A perfect time for a triple threat to shine. In my mind, at this man's age, no one can touch him for his for his lyrical, signing, and guitar playing genius. He has gained the repect and recognition of his biggest idols and some of musics biggest names today. All while acquiring three Grammy's. Thats impressive ladies and gentleman. Very impressive. Can't wait to see what is to come. Room For Squares was what John was, Heavier Things was an evolution and Continuum marks what JM is today and will continue to be in time. Three true studio albums down.. "Continuum" indeed, continuum indeed.
Continually Underwhelming February 28, 2007 Michael L. Starzec (Grayslake, IL USA) 6 out of 13 found this review helpful
I was bemoaning the death of the guitar in pop music in a conversation with friends and as a result of this conversation, I received this CD as a gift. With all the hype regarding the record, I was expecting to be blown out of the water. In stead, I was left shrugging. To be fair, Mayer has some good guitar hooks and occasionally interesting lyrics. However, if you're a person who has listened to music for any period of time, what Mayer has done in the record isn't anything that hasn't been done before. If you have heard Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughn, you've heard this stuff before, but done much better. My first problem with the record is that this was not a spontaneous artistic breakout or the discovery of a great artist who's been under the radar. Rather, this is a glaring example of pre-packaged, calculated 'maturity.' Mayer suddenly has long hair, is in dramatic artist poses: all the basic requirements for a rock star. His lyrics on the first listen seem to strive for profundity, but with a second listen, the phrasing seems to be nothing but trite line after line. All of it seems so artifically cool that I was left feeling I'd drunk a can of diet soda: my stomach was filled, but I got nothing out of it. The second problem is that the record's songs all sound the same. On the first song, you sort of nod and go, not bad guitar work. The second song, you think, okay, this is his sound. By the fifth song, you wonder if any of the songs sound any differently. When I got to the sixth track, I began to click through the CD to see if there was anything faster, harder on the record, different... but there isn't. It's all sort of slightly less than mid-tempo to slow to even slower tempo. What can be said is the record is model of consistency: if you like the same song and sound over and over, buy it. If you like an artist that can go harder in one song, go ballad in another, go anthem style in a third, don't get this record. The best I could figure, he's getting attention because he looks young but has a voice that sounds like he's a 40 something bluesman. Were he a battered looking person of color, I think the album wouldn't have gotten a mention. That and Jessica Simpson is dating him. In short, this record is what is wrong with music: bland, no risk taking and pre-packaged.

I have always loved John Mayer, and I own all his albums. However, this is my favorite to-date. His melodies are fresh and his lyrics are honest. Buy it. You won't regret it.

John Mayer is a talented musician and songwriter. I love this new disc. My favorite track is Vultures. This is a song about survival This song is also about trying to handle the pressures in life. Slow Dancing in a Burning Room is an interesting song title. It is a song about the tension between a man and a woman. Gravity is another track that showcases Mayer's talent as guitar player. His guitar playing on this track is very touching and bluesy. Waiting For The World To Change is another highlight here. This is a song about hope that things will change. Dreaming with a Broken Heart and In Repair are two beautiful songs about a person who is emotionally damaged from a relationship. The piano playing by Ricky Peterson is so good on Dreaming With A Broken Heart. I'm Gonna Find Another You is a song about a person moving on after a bad relationship. The Heart of Life is a pretty song about people need support from each other to survive in life. Belief and Stop This Train are two excellent song about respecting the different beliefs that other people have and keeping an open mind about everthing. Steven Jordan provides a great beat throughout this CD on the drums. I love this new album by John Mayer very much.
