It's Not All About the Guests May 23, 2008 Awaiting Landfall (Somewhere in the Milky Way) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Sonny Landreth is an inspired songwriter and a brilliant musician. I have never understood why he isn't a much bigger star. At least now we know someone appreciates what a huge talent he is. And what a cast of "someones." Just look at the list of heavyweights who are die-hard enough fans to take the time to collaborate with Sonny on this project. Pretty impressive. But, although they all did beautifully interpreting the songs Sonny wrote with each of them in mind, this album isn't really about the guests. It is pure and wonderful Sonny. Buy it and you'll rock through the flooded streets of New Orleans, fly out to the galaxy and around the dark side of the howlin' moon, come back to the earthly nostalgia of love gone by and the pain of love leaving, then drift off to sleep with the beautiful lullaby which closes it all out. Check out the sample tracks. There isn't one hit-the-skip-button song on this album. They're all fantastic. The only problem I've found is that it's addictive! I can't seem to stop listening to it.
Incredible work from an incredible musician... May 25, 2008 Bill Caris (Sacramento, Ca United States) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Sonny, PLEASE tell us you have these sessions on a DVD and that you WILL release it!! I wondered how Landreth would top 'The Road We're On' and he has done just that...'From the Reach' is clearly full of awesome guitar work. The super bonus here is the absolute clarity and accessibility of Sonny's song writing. Sonny has been knocked for being an inconsistent writer, but this album is rock solid from track 1 through 11. The bar is clearly and emphatically set for every other blues release this year. Bravo, Sonny!
from the Reach-Landreth scores again. May 26, 2008 James Harrison (Melbourne, Australia) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The Louisianna slide guitarist has again excelled. Each new album improves even further from the last (and they have all been good) great (original) songs and excellent musicians. The guest list is impressive, and an obvious mark of respect by his peers, Clapton, Knopfler, Robben Ford, Dr John, Jimmy Buffett, Vince Gill, Eric Johnson and Nadirah Shakour. Thankfully Landreth does not allow his guests overshadow his work- this is certainly a Sonny Landreth CD-not a collection of duets. The eleven tracks are all pearls with Sonny's driving guitar work dominating with some tastefull fills from guest guitarists as mentioned. Predominately swamp rock and blues landreth's latest offering surely must raise his profile and provide him a much deserved larger audience world wide.
Clapton was right June 6, 2008 Mac Dean (Albuquerque, New Mexico) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
He had a show here a few years back--WOW!! As old as I am (been there, done that) it takes a LOT to blow me away but Sonny did. 20ft. from the stage and TOTALLY MESMERIZED for the ENTIRE SHOW! The poster outside the venue had a Clapton quote about "best slide player". Clapton, Raitt, and Thorogood play SOME slide(love 'em all), but Sonny is totally slide. I was born and raised where Tab Benoit comes from (Houma, La.) and was in school with his mother, so there's that south Louisiana connection. Blues forever!
a musical blessing! June 19, 2008 J. Resue (Syracuse, NY) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm a very new Sonny fan, after becoming aware of him only by seeing Clapton's Crossroads festival. Thank you Eric!! If there's such a thing as a perfect album, this is it. All the lyrics, playing, and production work together to create a moving and evocative experience that I cherish with every listen. I read online that Sonny's lyric writing is inspired by William Faulkner. How many songwriters can say that? Sonny is clearly, not only a huge talent, but an evolved human being, and I hope he finds the wider audience and popularity he so richly deserves.
