Truly beautiful - but falls short in one spot April 25, 2008 medicdave (Upstate NY) 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
I've only recently become a Weepies fan, but I enjoyed "Say I am You" enough to eagerly look forward to the release of "Hideaway". After a few listens through the 14 not-a-bad-egg-in-the-bunch tracks, I can say without reservation that it's a truly beautiful album. The vocals and instrumentals are thoroughly enjoyable, and the lyrics are smart and understandable. Unfortunately, I can't give "Hideaway" a 5th star, by no fault of Deb or Steve. While the music is beautiful, their producer has done them quite a disservice by recording a largely flat, boring-sounding disc. Listening on a pair of audiophile-grade Grado Prestige Series SR125 Heaphones, there's almost no dimension to the recordings, leaving vocals sounding flat, bass sounding dull and percussion lacking pop. The guitars seem to have a bit more presence, but this is almost worse yet, as you pick up on a little detail in the fingerwork, only to be disappointed when the vocals of any given track begin. On my first listen, I actually checked all the connections and settings between my source and my ears, hoping to find something out of whack. No dice - and a quick listen to some other recordings confirmed that this problem happened somewhere between The Weepies and the CD. Too bad - if the recordings only matched the dimension of the music behind them, this would unquestionably be a 5-star album. Either way, it's still well worth buying, and I'm glad to have it as part of my collection!

This record has been highly anticipated in our house. We are once again delighted by the talents of The Weepies. Give Hideaway a listen (free) and see if you agree.
It's beautiful! June 17, 2008 Abromeitiella (Washington, D.C.) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I haven't enjoyed discovering a recording like this in a long time. It is full of surprises if you keep the volume low. If you crank it up you will want to dance of course. That is that magic of this disc. It keeps giving in unique ways that I still look forward to listen to. If you love a great discovery and a band that will put a wry grin on your face from time to time, may I suggest you listen to the MP3's provided and decide for yourself if you want to weep in sorrow and joy with those who made the conclusion that this is a disc that you need to listen to straight through.
Poetic and Chill Equals Amazing July 9, 2008 Jinx LeFroy (USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
First of all, I love The Weepies. This album is another brilliant addition to their discography. If you're looking for something to just relax to, then this is it. The best thing is these lyrics actually have meaning behind them unlike the tunes commonly heard on the radio. It's so refreshing to hear such unique lyrics pertaining to life and not just love/sex like more popular artists. I think The Weepies album "Say I Am You" was more of a hit for me personally, but this one "Hideaway" is also very good. My favorite songs on this album are: Hideaway, Antarctica, Old Coyote, and Just Blue.
Great songs. Great sounds. April 27, 2008 Boulder Bear (Denver, CO) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Incredible music. Their previous record, "Say I Am You" was one of my favorites of 2006, and I still have it heavy rotation (for me, others in this category are Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Dire Straits). I think Hideaway, as a record, easily matches up to their last one, but also represents a slightly more mainstream sound. There is a breeziness that I like - maybe it's Deb's voice, maybe it's the songwriting. I like having it on the background, and I like having it on when I'm not doing anything else. I can truly say their music moves me, and that is pretty rare these days. The best of the new singer-songwriters. Standout tracks for me are Hideaway, Orbiting, Can't Go Back Now, Antarctica and All This Beauty. A previous reviewer mentioned questionable sound quality. I have to say I disagree - it's magically listenable. I put my copy on alongside U2's Joshua Tree and Peter Gabriel's Us, and while it's maybe a little quieter than U2, it's still deep and nice. And I'm an audiophile. FINAL VERDICT: Easily worth the price of admission, another Weepies record I listen to over and over.
