How The Mighty Have Fallen.... January 23, 2007 David F. Mamrak (Pennsylvania) 28 out of 51 found this review helpful
A friend at work let me listen to her copy of this disc. Oh My! Where to start? The choice of songs was poor and the performance was maudlin. Each song sounds basically the same. There is hardly any emotion being conveyed here. Bringing her children into the mix wasn't a wise choice either. The song, "You Can Close Your Eyes", by her ex-husband is a case in point. Someone is singing off-key in the backround. Sorry, the son and daughter don't have their parent's talent. I could picture James Taylor singing his own version of the song. There is just no comparison of his singing this tune to this mess of an album. I gave Carly one star because of what she has done in the past. This really deserved a big, fat zero.
Moment to Arise January 9, 2007 Lee Armstrong (Winterville, NC United States) 27 out of 34 found this review helpful
Carly Simon's "Into White" is a soft sweet set that comes across as tender & dear. The photography in the CD is exquisite and reflects the joy of music that Simon must have had recording these gems. My favorites include her rendition of Lennon & McCartney's "Blackbird." The strings are lovely and the vocal arrangement with Carly and son Ben Taylor is gorgeous, "Take these broken wings and fly; you were only waiting for this moment to arise." "Manha de Carnaval" with its "la la" lyrics comes as a gentle embrace. Carly's take on Simon & Garfunkel's classic song "Scarborough Fair" is so lovely and fragile that it takes this exquisite melody and produces a haunting quality with Teese Gohl's gorgeous flute. "Love of My Life" is also a very tender tune about the bliss of love. If there were any constructive criticism to make, perhaps a couple real toe tappers might help vary the mood. Nevertheless, this is an excellent set from one of our country's classic singers. Enjoy.
Carly's Best Album in Years--An Album of Folk Standards and Contemporary Folk/Pop Favorites January 5, 2007 Singer-Songwriter Fan (Northern OH) 24 out of 35 found this review helpful
I am a longtime Carly Simon fan and was pleased last year when her Moonlight Serenade album sold well. However, in my opinion, that album cannot hold a single candle to this gorgeous collection, Into White. First off, to my ears, Carly hasn't sung this beautifully since "Letters Never Sent" (1994). Her nuanced, up-front-in-the-mix alto is the star of this album. It is warm, emotional, and downright goosebump-inducing! Unlike some of her efforts of the past few years, this album to me feels like it was expensive to make. The packaging is beautiful to behold as well, inside and out. I listen to 13 of the 14 songs and only skip one. That is so miraculous on any album for me, I won't even bother to tell you which song I skip! She has returned to her folk roots with this album. Although she doesn't "belt" on this album in the same way, I am reminded of her "Anticipation" album and also to a lesser extent, her first self-titled LP. Calling this an album of lullabyes really sells the album short. I'd call it an album of folk standards and contemporary folk/pop favorites. The Beatles' "Blackbird" is beautiful, with great acoustic guitar. James Taylor's "You Can Close Your Eyes" will make you feel like you're listening to a Simon album from the '70's. The new song, "Quiet Evening", has "single" written all over it. Her stripped-down versions of "You Are My Sunshine" and "Over the Rainbow" will give you goosebumps! And even "I Gave My Love a Cherry", which fans of "Animal House" will recall Stephen Bishop singing on the stairway and John Belushi grabbing his guitar and smashing it, is absolutely gorgeous. It may be my favorite song on the album. Summary: Warm, luscious vocals, beautiful acoustic guitar and piano, lovely stringed instruments used only where desirable, some soft yet exotic instruments, and otherwise stripped-down sound and production make this a must-buy album for fans of intelligent pop and folk music.
Song Selection April 16, 2007 David Waldon (Australia) 20 out of 28 found this review helpful
I bought this CD because I like Carly's voice but was dissapointed with the song selection, it seemed like I was listenning to a CD of nursery rhymmes. However the music arrangements were good. Very dissapointed and threw the CD in the bin.
