5 out of 5 stars Rock 'n' Roll Never Forgets   February 25, 2008

This could be a very long review, but, I will make it short. It's a great recording. Drive By Truckers must be taken as seriously as the very origins of the R'n'R itself. They are chasing the same ghosts that everybody was when there were a non-firmly established Music Idustry: the ghosts of the dimension of a new born sound, Rock 'n' Roll. This is a "must have" record. Each and everyone thats assumes that knows about music, rather than watching the Zeppelin's destruction, must be a witness of the Rock's reconstruction.

4 out of 5 stars A fair to middlin' cd   April 6, 2008

This is a good cd; well written lyrics and basic good solid instrumentals.
The only criticism I may have is probably with the Amazon.com marketing people that made this cd appear more rock n roll than country, or country alternative.
I absolutely love "Self-destructive Zones," "That Man I Shot," and "You and Your Chrystal Meth." They have a good, hard rocking edge with solid lyrics that remind me a lot of Allman Brothers Band or Molly Hatchet.
The other songs, "Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife," "The Purgatory Line," "The Righteous Path," and "3 Dimes Down," Are decent country rock songs that sound real smooth. They aren't as hard hitting as the first three songs I described, but have a better more robust sound than these slower songs such as, "Sorry Huston," "Bob," or "Checkout Time in Vegas."
These are definitely more country than rock. I generally don't care for that particular sound, but it's not altogether bad.
I think "Bob" and "Lisa's Birthday" are, in my opinion country parodies. They come across as sounding country, but the lyrics are hysterical.
"Perfect Timing," "Goode's Field Road" and "The Monument Valley," are very good mellow ballads that really speaks volumes about basic living in this crazy messed up world.
I must say though, that for a country rock cd, it really has a wide range of songs to pick and choose from. If one prefers something with a heavy beat and grinding guitar riffs, than the first three songs I picked would be good options. If one prefers something mellower, than "The Home Front" or "The Monument Valley are excellent choices too."

3 out of 5 stars Very good,...but not their best   April 16, 2008

Yet another very good CD by the Truckers....the band always feels like it's on the verge of brilliance, but just never quite crosses over....stuck in Drive trying to make that transition to overdrive. The production continues to be interesting for the Truckers, I still really don't feel they have met that perfect match, or really captured the band's 'live' feel. I recomend the new Vallejo or Poi Dog Pondering CD's as an interesting journey into the right mix of songs and just enough production to not lose that 'feel'

5 out of 5 stars Highly addictive   May 17, 2008

This is an amazing album by an amazing band. To me, this is the best album of the decade so far. Not that I know every record made, but it is my favorite of anything I have heard. Is it flawless, no, a few of the (19!) songs are good but not great, "That Man I Shot" could have used a little work on the structure / lyrics toward the end, but Patterson Hood just continues to amaze with some of the most intelligent lyrics (are some of them a bit dark, yes, but I find it interesting, insightful, and often wry / funny rather than morose) as does Mike Cooley, and Shonna gives a great freshman effort in throwing her impressive creativity into the mix. The music is as varied as it is excellent, although this is decidedly more mellow than some of their older work. The overall way DBT has mixed country, progressive rock, 70's rock, and southern rock into their own unique hybrid, and added in exceptionally intelligent lyrics and passion, to me is just frackin' awesome. I just love it when a band forges their own path that is hard to compare to what came before them, rather than just copying what has already been done. And I give them a lot of credit on this album to be able to recover from the loss of a key band member, and use that as an opportunity to go in a slightly different direction rather than re-hashing what they have already done. The elevation of Shonna into a song writing role, the heavier incorporation of steel guitar, and a greater proportion of...I hate to say mellow...it's not like it will put you to sleep, but most of it is more akin to the mellow tone of My Sweet Annette rather than the more blazing old songs like Sinkhole, but to me, that is nice in that it is something a little different. I am so addicted to this album. In the first week I got it I listened to it over and over and over until I had to force myself to stop, for fear of wearing out the appeal of it. I can't get it out of my head. Buy this album.
