Worth the difference in price from the original March 9, 2007 D. Ben Jones (DC) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have both the original 12C and the Platinum. The Platinum calculates much quicker than the original and is more user friendly (including a simple back space feature so you don't have to clear the entire field and retype if you accidently press a number twice). I find the keys and the display are easier to read, as well. Depending on your financial situation, you may not want to buy it if you have a functional 12C, but if you are choosing between the two, definitely spend the few extra dollars and get the Platinum.
12CP vs. 12C display May 12, 2007 Greg 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The 12cp seems to perform about equally with my previous 12C, but there is a huge downgrade in the quality of the display. The 12CP display has thinner characters with less visibility in poor light, and most importantly they lose contrast at even a slight viewing angle as compared to a direct 90 degree observation (important when not directly over the calculator, such as on a desktop). The 12C had a very robust display with great visibility at an angle.
HP 12C Platinum Edition 25th Anniv pretty good June 26, 2007 J. Girton (Larkspur, California) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Hi, I have used a 12C for many years - needed it for the CFA exams. The new one has the advantage of allowing for non-RPN input, so that is good for balancing the checkbook, but of course so is RPN. The buttons feel very good. One complaint is that sometimes I have to hit the on button twice before it goes on. The other thing is, with investments getting into the billions, they should have added more zeroes to the display, as they have on other HP calculators. Finally, on stock options, you have to enter a 99 step program for Black Scholes - that should be hard coded into the calculator. Without these issues, I would have given the new calculator 5 stars. HP, you now know what to do next. Best, John Girton, CFA Investment Portfolio Manager
HP-12C Financial Calculator - 25th Anniversary Platinum Edition August 3, 2007 S. B. Hall (South Dakota) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
For years--25 of them--I coveted the top-of-the-line financial calculator from Hewlitt Packard, the 12c. I'm old enough to remember the first HP calculators--4-function devices with red LED displays--when they were introduced while I was in college. They were always the calculator we wanted, but couldn't quite afford. Since then, HP has set the gold (or in this case, Platinum) standard for calculators, and the Platinum Edition 12c does not disappoint. The only difference I can see between this model and the "traditional" 12c is the color of the metal surrounding the display: "platinum" (brushed aluminum) instead of gold-colored aluminum. Functionally, the calculator allows both standard and reverse-Polish notation (RPN) for entry. I'd never used RPN before, but I'm a convert--it definitely saves steps, and is easy to learn and remember. The HP-12c has dozens of built-in financial functions, and is also programmable. The supplied manual was written for the HP 12c Platinum, and is straightforward, easy to follow--even the sections on programming. Clear, definitive examples are provided, with step-by-step instructions for solving almost every imaginable financial calculation. There is also a section to explain the differences in calculations between the USA and Great Britain, so you prospective buyers "across the pond" should have no trouble working with the 12c. The 12c comes with a leather case--nice, but not sure how useful it is. I suppose it might protect the unit if you're carrying it around in your briefcase, but otherwise, you have to remove the calculator from the case in order to use it. However, this is a very minor quibble. In sum, the HP 12c Platinum is the best at what it does, period. You won't be disappointed if you buy this unit.

After having returned HP17b and buying the Texas Instruments BAII+ Professional, I read the reviews on improvements made to the HP12c Platinum Anniversary Edition. For ease of use and overall value I definitely like the TI BAII+ the best. However, for "power-users" of financial calculators, I'm pleased with the HP12c Platinum...if you can find it on sale.
