HP 50G May 25, 2007 Chad Bieber (Milford, de) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Fantastic product. I love calculators smarter than I am. RPN Rocks! I've run an HP 48G for a long time. It took a little bit of time for me to get used to the slightly different key lay-out, but not long. I like the click of the keys. I upgraded to the HP 50G mostly for the symbolic equation solving, and it works well. Does complex algebraic equations, will simplify or expand, as well as integration and differentiation. Beyond that, I know it does way more stuff than I am aware of, and continue learning new things with it.
Horrible industrial design August 4, 2007 D. Kent (Santa Rosa, CA USA) 3 out of 12 found this review helpful
I love HP calculators and RPN... but this packaging is almost impossible to get into. I couldn't open the plastic packaging with scissors or sharp knife. I had to attack it with a Chinese cleaver and a hearty swing, then much difficult tearing. And inserting the back-up battery was another exercise in frustration, requiring a screwdriver to lever this battery cover open, destroying the "fail safe" latch in the process. Don't purchase this unless you have very strong hands and an industrial strength opener (perhaps tin snips).
(Almost) Just like my old 48GX September 4, 2007 Bruce Warne 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
My trusty old 48GX recently started acting up - some keys just didn't work that well any longer. So I decided to start looking around for a replacement. I settled on a 50G. I'm glad I did. My thoughts: 1. The obvious: Same size as 48GX but with a larger screen. 2. It's a lot lighter than the 48GX. This makes it feel somewhat funny in my hands - being used to the nice solid feel of the old one. It seems to be put together quite well, though. 3. The biggest change on the keypad is that "enter" moved from left-center to right-bottom. I barely notice this as I mostly use the calculator for math, and with RPN you don't really need an "enter" key for that. 4. It's a lot faster than the old one. 5. It has some extra stuff - libraries and so on - but I think these are mostly used by students, so I can't comment on them. I'm suitably impressed. I think this is a worthy replacement. It's definitely not better than the old one. It feels more like a good copy, with some added features that no one will really use. Almost like a Lexus.
HP50G Review October 25, 2007 Allen S. Nygren (Maine!) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Upgrade from HP48. Does a little more than the 48, but is not built nearly as well. The ability for the unit to keep up with successive button pushes makes the unit slower than the 48. Often when entering data, where the desired input is 548.2 the unit may enter 58.2 or other. I needed to turn on the keypad click option to help me know when the unit is lagging behind in registering button pushes. Not a big gripe, but my work is slowed a little.
Not much innovation from HP since the HP-48 November 21, 2007 Justin Findlay 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This calculator is better than any in the 49 series (including the HP-48gII), although the keys and body are nowhere near as sturdy as the old 48 series. I wish the LCD resolution was as high as the TI-89. Sometimes there is a noticeable delay between button-press and the expected result. HP reintroduced the equation library from the 48 series for the 50g. This addition looks like mostly an afterthought since it shows up right at the bottom of the 'apps' menu and doesn't seem to have been modified at all from the 48 version. Altogether there doesn't appear to be much innovation in any of the 49/50g calculators beyond raw hardware improvements and durability deprovements. If you are thinking of purchasing a handheld calculator, buy this one. It's cheaper than the TI-89 and supports RPN entry mode. The other vestiges that have been amalgamated to form this calculator from HP's glory days like the well-designed equation library, and the graphing, algebraic/analytical, and solver utilities easily make it a great buy.
