Excellent AIO - So so software - Dificult Wireless setup March 30, 2008 Paul Constantino (San Jose, CA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I purchased this machine from Amazon to replace an older HP inkjet and Cannon scanner. While I considered other products, including the Cannon AIOs, I decided on the HP for the great combination of features and performance. The other reviewers mentioned the software and I agree with their comments. In place of the HP OCR software I installed Omnipage and it works great! While I havn t faxed with it yet I can t imagine there will be a problem. Photo output is better than the HP7250 photo printer this replaces. The scanner is about 50% faster than the Cannon Lide 80 scanner this replaces. I am a very happy camper! For me the hardest part of the setup was getting the wireless to work. I have a Zyxel 550 draft N router and the printer install kept failing with the output summary saying I had MAC filter turned on, which I did not. After several hours of changing settings on the router including assigning the printer a fixed IP address which I recommend for a printer so the driver do not get confused I decided to try a wired lan setup. This is what finally allowed me to install the printer. When I gained access to the HP printer profile settings, I was able to set the printer IP settings to match my wireless router. After that I removed the cable, turned on the wireless radio in the printer and was greated by a nice clean setup report and strong signal. So if you are having problems with the wireless making connection try this backdoor route with a RJ45 connection and set all the HP wireless settings to match your router. Also, in my router there is an option for Wireless G only or a combination of B & G. I can only get a connection if this was set to the BG mode even though the wireless connection to the printer is G. Go figure!
Huge problems with this printer March 31, 2008 JCW (boston, MA) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Do NOT buy this printer. The software problems, as noted by other reviewers, are prohibitive. I spent two hours on the phone with tech support just to get the thing installed properly. They said "You must have gotten a bad disk" and had me download the drivers from the website. However, a quick review of the tech forums on the web reveal that this was not a bad disk, this was bad software. Anyway, I held my breath once the install was successful hoping for the best, but ran into the next issue this morning when my Adobe Acrobat was not functioning properly. I went back to HP tech support and was told that there was a "known conflict" between the printer software and Acrobat, and that "HP is still working on that." That doesn't help me in my work - and I've now lost nearly two full days of work. And I am self-employed. I am glad I saved the box.
Great printer, horrible scanner April 21, 2008 Travis Illig (Portland, OR United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I picked one of these up to try and replace an old HP ScanJet 5P and an HP printer I had cluttering up the desk. I specifically chose this model because of the networking capabilities - as I move my home PCs to laptops, I don't want to have to maintain a print server. The print quality on it is gorgeous, as is the copy quality. I did some photo reprints and general color copies and they all turned out brilliantly. Network setup was a pain and I wasn't even using the wireless connection. I have one XP machine and one Vista machine and they both had trouble finding the printer on the network, even with all of the firewall software wide open. It took a lot of juggling to get it to work and I don't know what I'd have done if I wasn't reasonably technically savvy. The real problem came down to scan quality. Scanning a photo - not a reprint, but a real, lab-printed photo - turned out fine. A little grainy, but acceptable. Scanning anything printed - a CD cover, for example - turned out HORRIBLE. There was a terrible noise pattern introduced into the scan with crazy Moire effects. Even on solid colors, you could see Moire stripes. Crisp, clean lines would turn fuzzy and pixelated. It didn't matter what resolution, color depth, etc., I scanned at - it was always bad. I spent two weeks going back and forth with HP support, who told me that it couldn't be the hardware because the copies turned out nicely, so it must be the software. I installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled the HP bloatware probably four or five times on each of the computers (to make sure the OS was not the problem) and nothing solved it. Support even asked me to go back to an old version of the drivers because they were sure that would fix it. It didn't, and I don't think it was a software thing. If it was software, then it's been a problem people have ignored for a LONG time. I returned the unit to the place I bought it and will be looking at the Canon Pixma MX850 instead. I rate the product at three stars because most people who buy it seem to use it as a copier, fax machine, and printer but not as a scanner. It does great as a copier, fax machine, or printer, but as a scanner... horrible.
Works great with a couple of quirks April 24, 2008 Old, but SLOW (Davis, CA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I followed the advice of another review and downloaded the latest software - Version 10. I had no problem installing it and getting things working for all functions, except duplex printing. It turns out that it was working from the start, but there is a false error pop-up. When I specify duplex printing, a pop-up window with the heading "Automatic Two-Sided Printing Module Missing" appears. It gives two options, "Print" or "Cancel Printing", and said that it would be printed on one side only if I clicked "Print". I clicked "Cancel Printing", assuming it would not work and something needed fixing. I spent a couple of hours with HP online chat support, and was led through uninstall/reinstall, with no change in behavior. All tests showed that the hardware was installed correctly and that the two-sided module was installed and functioning. Then I decided to just see what would happen if I clicked "Print". I don't know why I didn't just TRY it earlier, but anyway, when I did click "Print" anyway, it printed duplex. I've entered a report on the HP site asking them to fix the software, but have not heard back. Sooooo..... definitely DO download the latest software and don't trust any error messages until you have verified that they are actually true. Also, I purchased a C7250 vs. the C7280. I asked online tech support whether there are any technical differences, and the answer was no. They said something about "different zones" that the products are shipped to. Apparenlty it is a market segmentation attempt on HP's part.
Wonderful AIO Printer May 7, 2008 Santa Clarita Mom (Santa Clarita, CA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
May 6, 2008: I recently purchased this HP AIO printer from Best Buy for $179 to replace the horrible Canon Pixma MP780 I had. The Canon had a "scanner error" -read my review on Amazon. Here are my pros and cons for the HP C7280 AIO. I plan on updating my comments as I use the printer more often and as time progresses. PROS: Easy to setup software on a Macintosh - I recommend you download directly from [...] to get the most recent drivers and not use the CD Extremely easy to install ink cartridges - same cartridges print photo and regular print on paper Reprint Button - amazing feature, place a photo on glass, makes another photo of original photo User friendly buttons Photo Print Quality - Good, not excellent Easy to make copies Scanner finished fairly quickly - very easy to use CONS: Reprint photo - came out slightly more yellow than original HP Photosmart Studio Software - Seems very basic (brightness, contrast, exposure, color, saturation adjustments, red eye, and cropping features) if you need to shade things out, use Photoshop or something similar Ink Runs - within a day of printing a recipe, I accidentally dropped some water on paper and the ink bleed so badly I couldn't read the word Slow to initially print in general Editing HP Photosmart Studio software is also slow to print TBT (To Be Tested): Installation on PC Fax Feature Wireless capability Just to note, I bought this printer mainly for the printer, scanner, and copier features. The wireless and Fax features were not requirements for my purchase.
