5 out of 5 stars Great value at a minimal price!   August 26, 2005

As a financial advisor I have been using my HP 10bII heavily for years and have never had a problem. I liked it so much I bought one for each of the other planners in our office, and they won't go anywhere without them.

It's functions are easy to learn, keys are well labeled, the construction is sturdy (and durable), and has a much more pleasing appearance than its predecessor, the 10b. Nothing says "70's insurance salesman" quite like the outdated styling of the 10b. Even though it is a fine calculator, I admit a little embarrassment in bringing the 10b out in front of clients.

I have personally found the 10bII to be my favorite calculator at any price. You could pay a lot more (for additional features), but most people (outside of the heaviest number crunchers) will not need to.

After 20 years my HP 17B died and this calculator does just about everything that the 17 B did except for Bond Amortizations and I don't do them anymore. Full function, low cost.

1 out of 5 stars PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY...   October 16, 2006

I have owned this calculator for 3 months and the dispay is no longer working properly. Parts of the numbers have "burned out" so only parts of the numbers show now. At first I thought it was the batteries. SO I bought replacements and that was NOT the problem. It is now completely useless. At $30, this calc is 10x's more than what a basic calc costs, so that is no excuse for such a poor quality product. PLEASE read the reviews - they all say the SAME thing. I was a fool for buying this. I hope this will help you.

5 out of 5 stars Best Financial Calculator Ever!   February 16, 2002

CALCULATOR REVIEW:

HP 10BII is the new, updated version to the old HP 10B version. This new version is the same as the old version, but with a new design. I personally prefer the old design, but I really like the way the important functions--Present Value, Future Value, Payment, Interest, etc.--on this new version are highlighted with a silver plating around these buttons. Also, it's a good thing that they didn't rearrange the buttons around too much; most of the buttons are still in the same place as in the old version.

What I really like about this calculator is that it can hold numbers with 12 digits! You can also set the calculator to display up to nine decimal places, so you can get the most accurate answer to your calculations.

What I don't like about the calculator is that for doing multiplications, you can't enter something like, 2(5) or (2)5. You have to enter the multiplication sign, or the calculator won't give you the correct answer, which is ten; this is the only thing I don't like about the calculator, because I'd like to be able to enter equations like, 7(40-15) or (40-15)7.

Still, I prefer this calculator over other financial calculators. I could've gotten some other calculator for a cheaper price (like the one my school recommended me to get), but I like this one, so I'm willing to spend the extra bucks for it. I liked the original HP 10B version, but it's starting to malfunction, so I got the new HP 10BII version; if Hewlett Packard comes up with a brand new, HP 10BIII version, I'll probably get that one if my HP 10BII stops working for me.

4 out of 5 stars Decent entry level financial calculator   June 24, 2003

Although I have owned many scientific and graphics calculators the HP 10BII is my only financial calculator so I cannot make any comparisons with its competitors.

Even though it seems to me rather elementary, it certainly can do well what it was designed to do; simple statistics and time value of money calculations. I got a little worried when I read that some reviewers have found errors in the results provided by this device, so I have checked with a spreadsheet some typical calculations and I report that I have found none so far.
(This of course was not an extensive test but it built up
my confidence).

If you are interested in "looks" (I don't), it has a "conservative" air and will look nice enough in your desk. It is very light and thin and will fit easily in your coat or even shirt pocket. (The "case" it comes with is a joke though. Come on hp!. It is little more that a cheap plastic bag).

The manual is clearly written and you will be competent with this calculator after a very short reading.

My only major criticism is regarding the input keys. In my unit, some of them "CLICK" from time to time without registering anything. I have fast fingers and this is somehow annoying. Just have to go a little more slowly and check the screen, I guess! It also has a general feel of cheap manufacturing and does not look like something that will last for too long. Here I can only hope I am wrong!!
