Excellent Bang for the Buck! - OSX April 14, 2007 Kent Forrest (St. Louis) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
This scanner worked flawlessly out of the box with my new Intel Powerbook. It took only a couple of minutes to unpack it, take off the tape, unlock the transport lock on the bottom of the unit, polish the glass surface, plug in the USB cable to the computer and attach the power outlet. Installing the software was a simple insert the CD and respond to the screen prompts. Hint: After the software is installed and you run it the first time you will be asked at the bottom of the scan screen to identify (link) it with an "external program" - I would advice skipping the PhotoArc software installed by the CD and "link it" to your iPhoto application. Now when you make a scan it will be instantly installed in your iPhoto library. You can easily use the iPhoto tools to crop, clean, and organizae your photos. I have been using this with an OSX genealogy program (Reunion 9.03 and highly recommended). One limitation is that the negatives are for 35 mm only. If you have a lot of large negatives you will have to look at other options. However, the 35 mm negatives works alright but it is almost faster to scan just the photos. I have owned more expensive scanners but for $90 )including a free Amazon shipping promotion) makes this an excellent purchase.
Perfect scanner for me May 31, 2007 Ernest L. Harper 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
For less than $100, this scanner fits my purposes exactly. I have about 1300 35mm slides, some more than 50 years old, that I need to transfer to digital format, both for convenience and to preserve the images. The 4400F was relatively straight forward to set up and is easy to use. I do very little editing during the scanning process, mostly just fading correction and some cropping. If I choose to do so, I can do more sophisticated editing later. I will admit, however, that taking full advantage of all the editing features is somewhat daunting. Also, be prepared to spend a lot of time staring at your monitor. The scanner only handles four slides at a time and takes 10-15 minutes for each batch, depending on how much editing I choose to do at the time. Nevertheless, if you need a capable and economical scanner at a reasonable price, and are prepared to spend some significant time scanning slides, the CanoScan 4400F is a good choice.
Excellent scanner August 1, 2007 Techguy (Canada) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I am an IT person with 40 yrs in the industry. I look after some 50 people's PC stuff. This is my recommended scanner. Very reliable. Integrates well. Good value for the money. You can buy cheaper, but you can not get better value for your money. Only criticism is that Canon has not done its homework for Vista yet. They offer lame advice on how to find out if you can use the included software or not. However, this is an industry problem. There are lots of software and hardware that are not compatible because their makers have not been willing to invest in bringing their equipment/software up to date. Any Vista buyer needs to beware of this trap.
Works very well....ideal for slides and negatives October 5, 2007 Michael Hannallah 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I bought this as an alternative to a pricey all-in-one printer with a separate attachment for scanning negatives and slides. For the price, it's absolutely the best option out there. Scanning quality is very good and the software they provide works very well (particularly for removing scratches and touch ups).
