5 out of 5 stars Highly recommendable system.   August 13, 2008

Edited on August 22, 2008. I edited this review because only two people found it helpful and id like to re-examine my review to make it more understandable.

Now, this is a general review of the Xbox 360 system, and I will make no comparison to the Wii or to the PlayStation 3 because I do not own those systems. I bought my first Xbox 360 back last July (2007), it was right before they released the Falcon models. I had a lot of money to burn so I went all out on my Xbox 360; I bought a 120 GB hard drive, the HD DVD add-on, and a bunch of HD DVDs and games. A week after I hooked it up and had it I experienced problems with it, ironically it was not the infamous RROD, my console would just freeze constantly when I turned it. I luckily had an extended warranty. So I returned it and received the new Falcon model and I have had it now since September and its been working flawlessly. Before the Xbox 360 I was a huge Dreamcast/PlayStation fan boy (it was like a cross, I guess I will coin the term Soga for Sony and Sega). I loved games like Crazy Taxi, Skies of Arcadia, Battletanx, Army Men, Driver, etc. Sorry I am getting off topic, anyway I took the plunge with the Xbox 360 and I am satisfied. I don't honestly care about the console war because I don't see how it could effect me personally and the format war didn't effect me either because I can still watch Blade Runner and Children of Men in HD. The Xbox 360 is a fun system, however I highly advice you to buy an extended warranty. The Xbox 360 can upscale DVDs (with an HDMI cable) and has a great lineup of games (Gears of War, Halo 3, BioShock, Alone in the Dark, Oblivion, etc.) Not to mention that the Xbox 360 is compatible with most of the original Xbox games (you need to be signed onto Xbox Live for the firmware upgrade though). The only complaint I have with the Xbox is that it is built around Xbox Live, and if LIVE goes down, unless you have a single player game (Oblivion, Lost Odyssey, Alone in the Dark), you will have a hard time having fun because the Xbox 360 in my opinion is all about multi player games. Achievements are definitely a plus, and LIVE is useful because of extra DLC (down loadable content) which gives a game you buy more life (of course you have to pay for that as well). LIVE is cheap, only around $50 a year (which compared to WoW which is like $12.95 - $15 a month. Correct me if I am wrong on this please) Xbox Live is not that expansive and is ultimately a good deal. To reiterate earlier statements in my review the Xbox 360 has a ton of games that are fun, both new 360 games and old original Xbox games + Arcades games that you can download off Xbox Live (of course you have to pay for that as well). The Xbox 360 is a fun system, would I call it the greatest? No. I don't like stating 'facts' when it would really be my opinion. The hardware is improving (and I think the 60 GB is the Jasper model - don't quote me on this however). In closing this review, if you are a person who wants to jump into the next generation of gaming systems, take my advice; go look at the library of games that each console has to offer and make your decision based off how many games you'd buy if you owned that system because that is what it is all about, the games and nothing is more important in deciding a console then your preference of games. I like shooting games, and I like survival horror games and a lot of games today are multi-platform, but I chose the Xbox 360 and I don't regret it, because I am having fun with the library it offers. I hope my review has helped you. Thank you for reading.

Final Note: No, I do not feel ripped off buying HD DVD, watching Tremors and The Shining alone was worth it, so please stop spamming the comment section of my review. Thank you.

I ordered this system on October 4th and received a console manufactured in June of this year. This is not the newest hardware as Amazon claims.

I received my Xbox 360 today and tried to play a game and it did not work. I thought it was loading or something so I waited a very long time. I tried a couple of games but the system never loaded. Contacted Xbox support and was told that the system is freezing up and to send it in for repairs. I am returing it back to Amazon. I am very disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Quality -- Don't Bother   September 14, 2008

I purchased an XBox 360 for my children in December 2007 for Christmas. We then invested in Guitar Hero III. Loved it.

In June 2007, our unit began to freeze up regularly. Lost progress, had to leave it to cool down for hours or overnight. Finally, it wouldn't work at all, but froze on boot-up and stayed that way.

XBox replaced our unit with a refurbished unit -- took three weeks for entire process to get us our new unit. They did ship us a free box and we were not out of pocket for anything except gas to drive it to an UPS shipping center -- GET THAT shipping receipt!

It is now the middle of September 2008 and our second unit is dead -- we have the Red Rings of Death.

Submitted a Service Request again. We will receive a shipping box and ship it off to get a third unit.

This is common for the XBox 360. Don't bother getting one now. They are all defective, reputed to last no more than 2 years at the best.

BTW, I am a 48-year-old web designer parent. I am technically savvy and went through all of the XBox troubleshooting rigaramole each time. Again, these gaming consoles are defective.

I think I will sell all of our peripherals and games and invest in a PS3. Tired of this poor quality.

WOW!!! I just got this baby delivered today. I had it preordered off Amazon and I must say I'm quite impressed. This 360 is much quieter than my previous one and not nearly as hot. It took Microsoft awhile but they finally got it right!! Don't hesitate to grab this 360 :)
