Franklin Scrabble Companion February 20, 2006 James E. Higgins (Huntington Beach, CA USA) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
The Franklin Scrabble Companion (FSC) was priced fairly, and delivered promptly. A nice touch was the cloth bag with draw-string into which the FSC is stored when not in use. This product has a tendency to go into failure modes - this is the second one I've purchased and both products have this same tendency. However, there is a simple fix when this happens - depressing with a narrow point a button on the back always seems to work. In our Scrabble Club, the allowable words are changing; unfortunately, the FSC does not include these new words (eg., QI, FE, KI, ZA, ...). Not sure what Franklin's plans are to update the current model....
Out of Date January 28, 2007 Jennifer Miller 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This would be a great idea if it were not out of date. This uses the 3rd edition Official Scrablbe Dictionary. The 4th edition came out in 2006. It does not have many words, such as "za" or "qi" in it. If there were an up to date version, I'd buy it.
Great product, needs an update... May 23, 2006 William Snoddy (Asheville, NC) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is a very valuable product for anyone who wants to improve their Scrabble(R) game. For checking definitions (not that serious scrabblers always care about that) it is much quicker than leafing through a dictionary. The Jumble Game is particularly valuable when set at the higher level for seven letter words. However, don't buy this product UNTIL Franklin updates it with the new Scrabble word list! Email Franklin at service@franklin.com and tell them you might be interested IF they would do the update!
For more than just Scrabble October 24, 2006 Shawnee Cavnar Brown (Simi Valley, CA USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this to play the games in it, as I like Scrabble. But I found that I also use it as a dictionary, to check spelling, for crosswords, for other word games and to verify a word's existence. The games are fun, I'll admit. I particularly like "Mystery Word" Also, you are able to set your level of play, easy, intermediate and advanced. It's quite a useful item, small enough to chuck into your bag if you're execting a wait at the doctor's office, but easy to read thatnks to a fairly large display screen. I paid $50 at a retail store in town, even that to me was a deal. Amazon's a bit cheaper, so still a great deal. Recommended.
Sadly, not properly updated for 2007 August 24, 2007 FloridaSnowman (Central Florida, USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Our family is disappointed with this Companion. We own two earlier versions of Franklin Electronic Scrabble Dictionaries, purchased approx 1991 & 2002. Each has been a tiny treasure; well used at home, while traveling & especially at the beach! Purchased this because we wanted to update. CONS ..... 1. Too large, not easily carried with our Travel Scrabble. 2. Uses heavier, shorter lasting & more expensive batteries. 3. MOST DISAPPOINTING, does not have the UPDATED special little words that make great Scrabble crosswords & scores. It is even missing some that are in our older units! Having the newest legal Scrabble words is the exact reason we purchased it, so phooey to this gadget! PROS ..... You may like it if you have not already used the first generations of the Scrabble Companion. It is easy to read if you need larger buttons or print. Could be useful for teaching children or beginners. Has some games. Colorful. CONCLUSION ..... We will use our new Official Scrabble Dictionary in book form when at home. Not as much fun, but IT has the most up-to-date & challenging words. When traveling or at the beach, will use our old Companion while complaining we could have higher scores, if only....... ;-D
