3 out of 5 stars Installation problems - some tips for HP Officejet J6480   May 20, 2008

We have just set up this printer (HP Officejet J6480) and wanted to share our experience with installation.

The Starter CD that came with the printer did not let us install the software properly. With the HP tech support representative, we had to first uninstall the software. Then we downloaded the software from the 'HP Support and Drivers' webpage(http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html).

Before the steps listed above, we manually input the wireless network name and WEP key on the printer by clicking on the Setup button and choosing the Network Setup option on the menu (option 8). At no point during this installation, we connected our computer to the printer with a USB cable provided that your wireless system is up and running. In the end, the printer started working.

We highly recommend using the HP website to install the latest version of the software program and you can do it without the guidance of the HP tech support team.

Please note that we received some error message when we restared the computer to finalize installation but the tech support rep said to pay no attention to that error message.

Please also note that we have only tested the printing and scanning functions of this all-in-one printer. The other functions are yet to be tested...

4 out of 5 stars So Far So Good   May 16, 2008

So I've had an Epson Stylus Photo 825 for years that I paid around $350 for. It finally got to the point where I couldn't take it anymore. It scarred my soul and has been the only abusive relationship I've ever been in. I hate shopping for printers, but upon doing some research I landed on the J6480. It only took about 10 minutes to set up on my XP machine and not much longer on my Mac Book Pro running Leopard. The small amount of printing I've done so far has been adequate and within a timely manner. It's not too loud when it prints and the carts were easy to install. It doesn't have the 6 individual color tanks, but you have to concede somewhere on printers. The wireless and Mac ability were my two main features. I didn't really need a fax or another scanner, but hey, it's all here. So far so good. I'll update if I end up hating it. Printers usually end up being the bane of your own existence. I know I'll never buy another Epson again - even if they become the best printers in the world. I've been a battered wife for so long and now I'm in recovery. I don't normally write reviews, but they were helpful to me so...

4 out of 5 stars Great printer but beware of premature ink replacement   June 12, 2008

I've had the printer for three weeks and it works great. Other reviews have already captured the pluses and minuses of the printing/copying/faxing and wireless connection. I just want to give you a heads up about ink replacement. Don't replace the ink too soon. A week ago, I got the black ink replacement warning but decided to keep using the cartridge and run out all the ink. Well, a week and about 100 pages later, the black ink is finally running out. Glad I didn't rush to replace the cartridge. My suggestion? When the ink warning comes on, make sure you have a replacement cartridge handy but don't replace the ink until you run the cartridge dry. You might be surprised at how many more pages you get out of the cartridge.

1 out of 5 stars Wireless works, nothing else did   May 21, 2008

Our fine HP printer connected to our wireless network just fine. Install on Vista was smooth (well, smooth yet loaded with HP bloatware). Anyway, we were primed for wireless printing excitement.

Ours printed with about 60% reliability for a day, including 4 print jobs. Then went into a seemingly infinite loop of "spit out a page, make the 'I'm done' beeping noise, report paper jam, open lid see no paper jam, press ok, spit out a page, etc..." I say seemingly infinite loop because we only repeated the process 5 or 6 times before giving up.

The good news is that I can now scrape the HP Solution Center, HP Photosmart Essential 2.5 and HP Digital imaging monitor bloatware off my computer.

3 out of 5 stars Frequent crashes   August 12, 2008

I am using this printer as a wireless network printer.

The good:
1. Prints quickly
2. Double sided printing is slow (maybe 2 double sided pages a minute), but a very nice feature
3. Set up is straight forward

The bad:
1. The printer needs reseting 1-2 times a day. All the lights start flashing and the printer asks you to press the power button. If the printer knows it needs reseting, then why doesn't it reset itself? This is a real pain.
2. The print driver on my computer crashes daily. Once this happens, I have to restart the computer or I can't print.

We'll be adding even more exciting features to assist you in the coming year.
