Low Tech Works Best December 1, 2005 Philip F. Westcott (Columbia, MD) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
I have been cooking in resturants for many years and I never went a night without this thermometer. Its quick, accurate, and cheap. If it does go out of whack, just put it in a glass of ice set it for 32d. Get it you'll love it!! Just don't put it in the oven....
useful tool July 5, 2003 14 out of 17 found this review helpful
I purchased one of these and then promptly destroyed it. The face is plastic and should not remain in the oven. I melted the face. I purchased another and love it. Use it to test the temperature for bread and doneness for meat. Next time I will read all the other reviews more carefully!
FINALLY FOUND ANOTHER ONE November 24, 2002 E. JOHA (Phoenix, Arizona USA) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
THERE MAY BE FANCIER, COSTLIER THERMOMETERS OUT THERE. NONE, IN MY OPINION, WORKS BETTER THAN THIS WONDERFUL, SIMPLE TO USE DEVICE. MY FIRST ON WAS SPIRITED AWAY AT A DINNER PARTY AND I HAVE FINALLY FOUND ITS REPLACEMENT. WONDERFUL.
the industry standard - for good reason December 2, 2006 Puffer Red (California, USA) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I've had this thermometer for a while and I test it every so often for ice water (0 degrees) and boiling water (212) and it never wavers by more than 3 degrees. Its very simple and tough. The only limitation is perhaps that it takes a bit of time to read the temp, maybe 15 seconds. Skip the batteries, the infrared, and fork shaped thermometers. Stick to Taylor or their subsidiary Trutemp.
required for active dry yeast November 2, 2006 Dwight (USA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I have to use this to gauge water temperture otherwise my yeast won't bloom and then my bread dough will be useless. I like the strong plastic protector for the sharp pin. At the time that I bought this, it was cheaper than the candy thermometer which has the added advantage of hooking onto the side of the pot. However, this one can be stabbed into meat and the candy thermometer cannot be. I use this all the time so it is not gathering dust. Is this frugal? yes I need it to make bread Would I have purchased this used at a cheaper price off of craigslist? no Did I shop around for the best total price including the manufacturer's website? yes and so should you
