Suboptimal Service on Battery Replacement-and Remedy August 11, 2008 I. Seligman 6 out of 12 found this review helpful
I've used APC battery backup units for years at home and in my offices. They, and competitors' backups are generally good while the battery lasts, but then comes the problem you will face. Expensive Dead Battery. After only about 1.5-2 years, the battery has died in my unit, and this is a "normal lifespan". I decided not to buy a complete new whole unit, and called to find out where to buy a replacement battery, as APC advertises. The replacement battery, is advertised for a special low price of $29.95 plus shipping, on their website, however when I asked to buy it today, they said it was not available for over a month away!! That's NOT useful at all, if you need a new battery NOW! The person helping me quickly offered instead to sell me a more expensive new unit, for a lot more than a battery, and I said "No dice". She then told me I could easily get a replacement battery locally at Staples, and other Office Max/Lowes type places that sell their backup units. A call to them got no batteries, these stores never carried them. One said "No local retailers carry those big lead acid batteries, its just not practical, get 'em from APC". The APC rep could not find the name of the president of APC to contact, and could not get me a supervisor. I spent over 40" with 3 different service people, each offering an expensive upgrade, not the battery! My time was being wasted, and I smelled a Rat the size of an automobile battery! All I got, after an hour on the phone was a lot of "I'm sorrys" a tacky "bait and switch" to get a more expensive whole unit, instead of the replacement battery (RBC47) i needed. This is the ugly underside of the battery backup business. They claim easy replacement of the battery that barely lasts 2 years, yet somehow it's not available for months to you, when you need a replacement! What are you going to do when your battery dies in 1-2 years? PLAN FOR IT- TODAY. Go with a competing company that offers replacement batteries and promptly sends them, or wait for over a month for a battery replacement from APC, that may never arrive? They know to the day when the next battery will arrive, yet don't plan to have enough of a supply to last till then. You can wait over a month for battery backup with APC. Is this reasonable to you? APC, you have lost my business on your nonexistant support for your batteries. Bait and switch is not appreciated. ***Addendum*** I later pushed, and pushed, and finally got a person at APC to send me a new unit and battery in exchange for my old one, as I couldn't be without a battery for it a month. The new one is working. Local Office Depot and Lowe's do not carry batteries for these devices, as the reps would have you believe. Companies should be responsive, the first time, to help established customers stay happy customers. We'll see what happens in a year or two, when this battery goes...
will probably do the job, but very poor design and potentially short battery life April 19, 2008 mauricev 5 out of 11 found this review helpful
I have had experience with 10 units of a significantly older model and they generally worked as advertised, but the batteries didn't last that long (less than 2 years), and the electronics often got confused about whether a battery was dying. For these units, we've had them only for a few months, so it's impossible to say whether these units will perform better. One reason we replaced the older models was that there wasn't much cost differential between new batteries and whole new units! Anyway, I can comment on the design of these new units, which, remarkably, isn't much improved over the original models: First, the law requires the units be shipped with their battery disconnected, so it's necessary to connect it at the get-go: 1) The battery compartment is difficult to open. 2) There is no way to connect the leads without taking out the battery. 3) The battery is way too tight, so it is difficult to remove. 4) Connecting the leads to the battery is too difficult. 5) There are way too few outlets. These days, people have a lot of stuff on the desk in addition to their computer, such as an electric stapler, pencil sharpener, heater, lamp, calculator, and fan. (All these go in the surge outlets because they don't need battery protection.) 6) The outlets are spaced too close together. Many of the gizmos have fat power bricks. 7) At five feet, the power cord is way too short. Often, the power outlet isn't right behind the desk. It should probably nine feet! I shall dare say that most likely reason for these deficiencies in the design is probably because APC didn't hire a professional product designer.

We have this mounted on the top rack of our console unit. It fits in with the other unit and works well protecting the Flatscreen, DVD, VCR and Xbox.
APC UPS 550 Unreliable September 12, 2008 L. Marcus (Hauppauge, NY United States) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I own 5 of these BE550 units and every one of them has failed at one time or another. APC has replaced 3 of them at no cost (to their credit), but to no avail. They will work fine for 6 months or so and then, without warning and for no apparent reason, they begin beeping, indicating that there is no power supply, when in fact the electrical supply is fine. I believe these units have an inherent flaw in them and I will not buy another APC product. I need a reliable product - not a piece of garbage that won't last and fails without warning.
Excellent Back-UPS November 11, 2007 Francis C. Evans 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Does all I asked for - a somewhat unique use in that it has to supply enough power to turn a 2.5 watt, 120 volt motor on a "Water Cop" accidental water flow alarm device. It works!
