4 out of 5 stars Good Electric Tiller; Previous Mantis Gas Tillers Broke After A Year Or Two   May 23, 2008

The tiller is good and powerful enough where I use it in moderate soil (not too hard, not too soft). Speed is more controllable than with the gas powered units. I like this one much better than the gas units. I had a two cycle gas unit a few years ago it worked for about two years; it was difficult to start and keep it running. I always needed to monkey with the carburator screws. The seals on the tine shaft leaked oil. Finally, I reached my limit of frustration and replaced it with a four cycle version. It worked well for a year. It was nearly impossible to determine the amount of oil in the engine crank case. What failed on it was the push bulb that primes the engine before starting it. Although it was properly filled with lubricant, metal shavings were pealing off the worm gear and collecting in the gear box. The gas models would till verry well and even tilled into hardpan soil in California.

The electric version seems to be a much better product, although, I noticed that it arrived with inaquate grease in the gear box. I added lubricant. I assume it will till just as well in tough soil. Be sure to use a #12 extension cord so the motor does not over heat. The tiller also has a nice method of securing the extension cord so it does not pull loose from the tiller.

I purchased this electric model for my husband, who has shoulder problems. He has tried it and seems to like the way it handles. It works best in soil that has already been cultivated. He uses it mainly in his garden plot and flower beds.

5 out of 5 stars Great item - greater price and delivery!   November 24, 2007

There are a lot of mini-cultivators out there, but Mantis is probably at the top of the list. This little item has great power, is easy to manage, and makes easy work of dirty-work.

Above all, because it's electric it is neighbor-friendly - a real plus in an urban setting.

The price was great; and they delivered it faster than promised. Excellent deal!

The video on the manufacturer's web site made it look like the Mantis electric could move mountains with ease Mantis 120-Volt Electric Tiller/Cultivator with Border Edger and Kickstand #7250-15-02. I purchased it to rip up my existing grass lawn with the intention of reseeding from scratch. Easier said than done. The effort was tough, exhausting and ultimately not worth it. It's too light weight for this task and probably better at moving a mole hill than a mountain.

Also, halfway through the task, the pin holding one of the wheels just flew off! It took nearly an hour of sifting through the dirt to find it.

I packed it up and sent it back to Amazon. Their return policy makes it easy; went online and arranged for UPS to pick it up at my house at no charge. Amazon has just issued me a credit.

5 out of 5 stars Mantis Electric tiller   May 22, 2008

I bought this item after considering both gas and electric tillers of all brands and sizes. I have a vegetable garden of clay soil and rocks of about 10 feet by 30 feet that I have turned over by hand in past years.

Many rocks and roots remained. The tiller was able to go through these steadily, despite my initial reservations about its size/ strength. I had to stop to clear jammed rocks on occasion, but this was easily done. I was also able to work in manure effectively.

I had initially thought about buying a larger gas tiller. I am glad I did not. The upkeep for this tiller is minimal, it doesn't need to be winterized, and it is quiet compared to gas tillers (which I have used in the past). The tiller is also light, easily carried and stored, and can work small areas of soil as well as edge beds and grass.

I highly recommend this for all but the largest of residential gardens.
