5 out of 5 stars BEST SMALL GARDEN TILLER   May 24, 2008

I have been home vegetable gardening for 40+ years and have owned several tillers including TroyBilt. This is by far the most versatile tiller you could own for a small garden. It is light, quiet, easily maneuverable, and does an excellent job around plants, between rows and tilling in compost.Mantis 120-Volt Electric Tiller/Cultivator with Border Edger and Kickstand #7250-15-02

4 out of 5 stars REALLY Surprised..!   June 5, 2008

I bought this item because I have a small Flower garden that was just over grown with weeds and Roots from old shrubs that had been removed... I was getting ready to plant new Shrubbery and felt that the existing old roots would interfear. This little tiller had a good review and with the One Year Guarantee I figured that if it did the trick GOOD... If Not I could return it.
Well getting an Electric Roto-tiller I figured would be marginal at best. I had borrowed BIG machines for other jobs around the property and knew that this is not an easy process, digging and clearing up the Ground...
Well let me say this "little" Machine just tore through the area I had to work on and also doug up some roots from an old TREE that once stood on the property that I thought had been completely removed 15 years ago. SUPRISE.!
Well this little tiller worked so well that I can say that the old "To DO LIST" just got a wee bit longer... :-) OH Yea... I don't think I'll be returning this tiller any time soon.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING   June 27, 2008

I purchased this with the hope of eliminating the neighborhood kid I had taking 6 hours to plant 4 plants @ $10.00/hr. He wanted $15!! I received the tiller and watched the dvd (a must) and put it together - not hard to do if you watch the dvd. Took me about 20 minutes to put together. Then I realized I didn't put on the kick stand yet but that was easy too and the kick stand is a great asset!! Had the tiller outside within an hour! I was a bit worried that it wouldn't perform as it did in the videos online but I was proven wrong real fast! The tiller tore into the ground with ease and I had perfect planting soil in no time. It's 20lb. weight allows even me to use and I have a bad back. And it is quiet as stated. My nosey neighbor had no clue I was working outside until he saw me!! No more neighborhood kid ripping me off! I do it myself with my mantis tiller!! I do think they should include the Tine Detangler with the tiller. I highly recommend this product.

4 out of 5 stars Works as described and advertised.   August 11, 2008

I am pleased to say after an afternoon working with the tiller that it works as demonstrated and advertised, despite my initial concerns and skepticism. The manufacturer's website is short on product detail but long on hype and testimonials. I feared the worst.

Assembly was easy amd painless. If you don't care to read the product manual, take the moment to watch the enclosed DVD. The kickstand proved a little difficult to install. There is very limited clearance under the motor housing to properly tighten the 2 mounting bolts. You'll need a 3/8" offset box-end wrench to install it at its proper location. I didn't have one on hand, and had to install it farther out to allow room for the ratchet head. This pinches the lower handles to a narrower angle, and so places a little strain on the upper handle assembly but does not otherwise hinder function. The extra tension on the palm nuts might actually help prevent them from vibrating loose.

The afternoon's project was a 12x15 foot courtyard, long overgrown with weeds, and the dirt not disturbed in over 10 years. The effort level was reasonable even in the mid-day sun and high-80's temperature and humidity. The best advice I can give is to let the machine do the work. You'll still need to put in some muscle to hold it back and guide it where it needs to go. Again, not at all unreasonable. I wasn't expecting truly effortless, since it didn't come with an air-conditioned cab.

Those who suffer mild red-green color blindness should probably consider immediately getting an extension cord with a color other than orange. I replaced my newly nicked up extension cord with a bright yellow one. Blue would also have enough contrast in the green overgrowth to help avoid mishap. I'll close with this thought: power cords don't mix well with brush cutting or ground thrashing equipment. It's a toss up right now whether the convenience of not having to pull a starter cord outweighs the ongoing attention needed to keep the power cord clear of the work area. The electric tiller sure is quiet, though. Not needing hearing protection also weighs in favor of electric.

1 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING   September 10, 2008

THE TILLER DIED ON THE SECOND DAY. I COULD NOT COMPLETE TILLING MY NEW BACKYARD THAT IS ONLY 12' WIDE X 25' LONG!!!! YOU HAVE TO DE-WEED AND MOW AND PULL OUT AS MUCH GRASS AS YOU CAN BEOFRE USING THE TILLER TO BEGIN WITH.
IT IS NOT A CHEAP MACHINE EITHER - SO I WOULD SAY IT IS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING, AS NOW MY YARD IS NOT FINISHED AND THE TILLER IS JUST SITTING ON THE BACK PORCH USELESS.
